Aren't we all just one big nation?
Under God or under Shiva,
does it matter if you believe her?
If everyone has the right to live
why are so many people against it?
Instead of freedom we get chains,
social handcuffs to our brains.
We can't speak out on what we're feeling
but our masks are slowly peeling.
We should be ashamed that we're all the same.
Who doesn't want a piece of fame?
We follow Hollywood in footsteps so disturbed.
Did you get what you deserved?
Cleanup needed in aisle six;
someone dumped the hypocrites.
Now they're running our governments,
raising our children as punishment.
This fear of being different and isolated
has made us lonely, feared, and hated.
Do we believe in equality today
or is it just something nice to say?
Gays, and Jews, me, and you,
liberty's not a dream come true.
But as we send off all our troops
we end up in the same old loop.
Take the nukes out of your own heart
before ripping others' lives apart
For no reason, love, or democracy.
Only then will we be free.
This won second place in the November 2005 poetry contest.
