So I'm curious as to what media players people like to use, and why. I use Amarok, and before that Winamp, because they're both pretty win like that.
Also if you use WMP12 or iTunes you are a failure.

As a further point of interest, I was wondering how many Commers have Last.fm accounts. I have one, as most people know. It's under the name ZethHolt.

If you don't have one, do you think you'd consider getting one just to scrobble to? I've been thinking of making a Comm Last.fm Group, so we can see what kind of overall music trends the Comm has going on, but if it's just going to be three or four people I don't think it'd be much worth the effort, nor really accurate at all.

Well I've registered my vote with WMP (and, as you know from yesterday's conversation, it's WMP 11), but I'm not sure I'd necessarily call it my player of choice; it just happens to be the one that's already on this laptop, and I have so little space on here that I'm reluctant to install extra things if I don't need them.

I also have Winamp and VLC on other computers.

And, as you know, I have Last.fm. I love the idea of a Comm Last.fm Group, even though I don't listen to a lot of music on the comp. If you set one up, maybe I'll be tempted to play some more of my music while I'm on, just so my Last.fm account doesn't look like I only ever listen to JRock. :P

If you're worried about space, Winamp is a much smaller software package and uses less of your computer's resources than WMP does, and does a better job IMO.

I'm in if you do a last.fm group. Also, I love Amarok... but I can't wait to see what Nightingale has in store! Whenever it's finished that is.

I use Itunes currently just because of my Ipod, but my player of choice is definitely winamp when it comes to music. VLC is what I used to use for video till I upgraded to GOM(Does everything VLC does but much smoother) I do not understand why Windows media player exists. it cannot play 90% of the media file types existing. Itunes serves its purpose for me. It can play all types of audio files and auto manages my Ipod.

I am pro last.fm group, also.

Having now got a new laptop, I've installed Winamp, and that's currently my default but, obviously, I can't now change my vote (unless anyone on the staff considers it worth bothering to edit).

We do have a Last.fm group! I just remembered today when I signed in to look something up:

http://www.last.fm/group/Mercury+Forums

We should all add each other and stuff.

Yeah a couple people are already in it, I just figured some other Last.fm users who maybe didn't see it might be interested. :crystal:

I'm Winamp all the way, and still scrobble to Last.fm though I rarely get on there.
I still like Amarok but I got sick and tired of it dumping my song ratings, because I am very anal about the organisation and rating of my music.

I'm not so worried about ratings, but when I used to use WMP it used to erase my album art all the time. That pissed me off pretty bad. And iTunes started doing it recently, too. I don't know what the problem is. Maybe because I have so much music?

Seems unlikely. I'm not really certain why, but it seems like a LOT of the newer generation music players have a problem with album art.
Personally, I think it's because they're all being geared toward cloud sync. Very many albums have multiple covers that have been associated with them either officially by producers/record companies or by listeners who use the software. When one album gets tagged with multiple covers (as is apt to happen in a cloud computing environment such as the world is becoming), it's not surprising that the software gets confused.

Not that I'm defending the software devs in any way--there are lots of easy fixes to this problem. Blatant plug: I've never had any problem with Winamp and cover art. And I'm about as anal about the cover art as i am with the ratings.

I use Winamp too. I like my music player to just be a music player (I mean, I know it can play videos and stuff too, but I just use it for music) because I don't need it to keep track of my library or...really, do anything besides play the songs. I use Windows Media Player for downloaded videos/DVDs and to rip songs from CDs, but otherwise it just sits there waiting until I need it again.

And I'm in the Last.fm group as well, though I don't even remember how I found out it existed. :p

Spotify is seriously the most awesome shit ever. I personally use Spotify Premium. The ability to make playlists and do an offline sync to my phone so I can listen to them anywhere is worth $10 a month to me.

It's all browser based, save a small music manager that handles music syncing. They prefer to not load your computer down with stuff.
I mean admittedly there's a steep bandwidth sapping as it uploads all your music the first time, but after that's done it's smoothing sailing. I just left my computer running while I was out of the house for a couple days, pausing the upload while I was using the internet, and was done with it. When I add new music to my library it uploads it to the cloud immediately. I have a widgit on the homescreen of my phone so I can listen to my music anywhere.

On mobile it does. I don't know about on an actual computer, but that I'd have to say I think not. I don't really play through it when I'm at home on my desktop and have Winamp available.
