So, I thought I'd make an archive of legally free music. I really love to support bands that offer their material free, so post what you've got! I'll try to make this post into an archive for everything posted.

Electronic

Run Away From Me - Ephixa (Dubstep)
George & Jonathan (Chiptune Funk)
The Kleptones - Yoshimi Battles the Hip Hop Robots (Mashup of Hip Hop and Psychedelia)

Folk

Andrew Jackson Jihad (Folk Punk)
Defiance, Ohio - Discography (Folk Punk)
The Taxpayers - A Rythym in the Cages (Folk Punk)
The Wild - Set Ourselves Free (Folk)

Indie

Anamanaguchi - Power Supply (Bitpop)
Bear Cavalry - Canadia (Dance Punk)
Bomb the Music Industry! - Goodbye Cool World (Ska Punk)
The Depreciation Guild - Nautilus EP (8 Bit Shoegaze)
Moonface - Dream EP (Progressive Indie)

Metal

In Legend (Piano Metal)
Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom (Avant-garde Symphonic Metal)
Kekal - 1000 Thoughts of Violence (Indonesian Avant Post-Black Metal)
Kekal - Acidity (Indonesian Avant Post-Black Metal)
Kekal - Audible Minority (Indonesian Avant Post-Black Metal)
Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second (Avant-garde Progressive Metal)

Post-Rock/Metal

Explosions in the Sky - The Rescue (Post-rock)

OSTs and Cinematic

Epic Soul Factory (Cinematic Professional)
Bastion
Harry Callaghan - Tier 3 (Portal 2 Mod; professional quality; available in FLAC if desired)

I know I have a few more albums that are free (especially in electronic), but I can't think of them at the moment. I'll add them as I can. Enjoy and contribute!

I find it odd that Butcher's Ballroom is offered legally free, but Sing-Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious isn't. :/
Any idea what's up with that?

They had a label change... so that may be it.

Nice collection you've got here. I'm sure there's a few out there that I've seen around the net...I'll put up some links if I can find them ^^;

Let's revive this. I found that In Legend gives away their Piano Metal for free at their own site:
http://www.inlegend.de/media/releases/pandemonium-ep/free-legal-download/

And I guess Steven forgot all about George & Jonathan; chiptune funk for free:
http://georgeandjonathan.com/

Also, if you're up for some Andrew Jackson Jihad:

Necroposting for great justice!

The Bastion soundtrack is up for free. The game itself comes highly recommended, but the soundtrack is really fantastic, for a non-AAA game.

Here's some softcore dubstep from a guy who actually knows what he's doing most of the time. He decided to give this track away for free, so set the "Name Your Price" minimum to 0.00.

Tom Milsom's Ephemera

If you don't download this while you have the chance, you make angels cry. I mean, it's basically all the stuff he didn't think was worth using on other albums with fixed prices, but still.

Watsky & Mody is also free, if you're willing to listen to a rap-bluegrass fusion. It's... Different.

Amanda Palmer released this single in celebration of escaping Roadrunner Records so I'd download it just to stick it to them.

Watsky, Tom Milsom, Amanda Palmer, and Ochre all offer select albums with no minimum on naming your own price on bandcamp, but I'd still feel guilty about giving nothing. *shrug*

Both those songs are free. I haven't listened to The Watchmaker's Apprentice yet, but I've listened to The Doctor's Wife numerous times. It's really really great. I can't imagine The Watchmaker's Apprentice not being likewise.

O yes! I too have listened to the Doctor's Wife a number of times (I think you introduced me to it). I think it's a really wonderful song. Very moving. I hadn't heard the Watchmaker's Apprentice before. It didn't do as much for me as the Doctor's Wife, but still a very good song, with an interesting storyline. (I particularly like the fact that these songs each narrate a story.)

All Day by Girl Talk. Don't listen to the tracks individually or on shuffle. It's supposed to be taken as basically a 71-minute song.

Two cinematic/videogame genre albums by a group of four professionals in the field of musical composition. I don't know what their motivation is, really, other than a little pocket change, but they make these really great tracks that you can buy a license for use in web and amateur projects and stuff. HOWEVER--and you'll find this written clearly when you click download on this site--which their official host--the music is quote/ 'free and legal for personal use' /unquote.

The Portal genius known as Harry Callaghan is giving away a full original album of his top notch stuff for a cancelled Portal 2 mod he was working on. I would highly suggest supporting his work with money anyway though.

Duly downloaded (and I did give him a nominal sum. I'm sure they'd have had to pay him, even if the project was cancelled, but it still seems a terrible shame that all that work was wasted; there's some cool stuff in there).

And now for something completely different: The technical death metal band Arsis has a new EP, and it is totally free. Also, that rhymes.

Not really sure if this is anyone's thing, but I thought I'd share it anyways.

Speaking of Portal (a month ago), the entire Portal 2 soundtrack minus Exile Vilify is available for free 100% legally over here. I'm listening to it right now, so I figured I should share the love.

All the Symphony of Science songs (it's a project that makes songs about, well, science by autotuning scientists and setting them to music-trust me, it's much better than it sounds) are available for pay-what-you-want on the guy's website, here. It's a really amazing celebration of science in general.

He also did similar songs with Mr. Rogers, LeVar Burton, Julia Child and Bob Ross, but they're not on the website, I think because they were commissioned by PBS specially.

DJ The Fish Head

I know he has a silly name but listen to a sample of his style of remix:

Watch on youtube.com

He distributes all his music free. Here's a link to his Pokeremix album; if you poke around his soundcloud you'll find the rest of his stuff.

The Project that owns that channel seeks top be a collector of the best internet dubstep. I was telling Tyler that I got so used to hearing bad dubstep that I wasn't ready, I guess, to hear so much GOOD dubstep in one place. You can listen to individual tracks that catch your eye to see if you like them (there a number of different artists and groups collected into this project--Alpha Noize and Spag Heddy have become my favourite artists, though Different Heaven by Pentakill has become one of my favourite tracks) and then check the description for free download links (these are not record labelled published tracks; it's actually free). Almost all of them have one.
