The manga apparently has been ongoing for a while, the anime is by episode 5. A summary blatantly taken from MyAnimeList

"Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind."

Watched episode 5 yesterday and that was easily one of the most shocking, intense and amazing endings to an episode I've seen in a while. Great series and I'd recommend it.

I've never heard of this one. Sounds rather intriguing. I may see if I can hunt it out and see what I think.

I've heard of it; half my friends on Twitter are watching the anime and a few are reading the manga. It sounds interesting but I haven't had the time to watch it. Perhaps this summer.

I wandered across the manga a while back, it's been fun watching people's reactions to the anime.

Yesterday I watched all 16 episodes that are out. It's pretty good. Not sure how they're going to wrap it up in the next nine, though. Well, to whatever extent they can wrap this up.

Yeah, there's no point in the manga where the anime could just stop and feel finished, so either they're going for an anime-only ending or they're going to aim for at least another season.

If it ends where I think it will, there's going to be one hell of a cliffhanger.

Spot on. :D

Apparently the plan is for the manga to end at 20 volumes, so I guess the manga's already more than halfway done. (It's partway through volume 12 at the moment, I think.)

That works out at about two and a half seasons for the anime, I think, so I'd guess they'll push it up to three.

I think it's like one chapter into volume 12, yeah, but I might be wrong.

I haven't seen the last episode but yeah I think you're right, I think it will end up being three seasons. Especially given how much we're expecting will happen in the remaining 9 or so volumes.

Well, chapter 50 marks the end of volume 12 (or it should, considering the 4 chapter per volume pace they've been going with) so I expect this to finish up somewhere between 82-85 chapters. I think 3 seasons sound likely, actually.

So I started watching this last night. (yay netflix and such) I'm like six episodes in, and damn. Brutal to say the least. Though it's nice to see a show where the cocky main character actually gets some comeuppance for being stupid.

It's kind of surprising how good it is considering the studio had only done one show before that*. (Hal, in case anyone's curious. I personally haven't heard of it.) But apparently they're all big fans of the manga, which explains a lot. They're planning on doing a second season but are working on something else right now.

* It is a subsidiary of IG Port, which houses Production I.G., which is known for a couple of Tales games, Prince of Tennis, Psycho-Pass, and and Ghost in the Shell, among other things. So it's not like they're completely new to this. The producer also worked on Guilty Crown and I think the director worked with Tsubasa: Resevoir Chronicle. Still, new studio, second show is a hit? Nice job.

Not to derail the topic here or anything, but Ghost in the Shell; that name's popped up across my internet a number of times recently. Opinions/impressions?

I loved the two (at least there were two when I watched it. There may be more by now) TV series, but I found the movies rather difficult to follow. It's a very long time since I saw them though so I can't remember them in enough detail to give examples.

I've seen a good portion of it, and while there's moments where you can definitely tell it's a product of its time, it's pretty good, in my opinion.

I really really liked Attack on Titan until
Spoiler: show
that guy became a titan
and the show became just another typical anime. Up until that moment though, it was so desperate and brutal. I really thought I was getting into something that turned into something else.

No, that's probably the biggest thing that bothers me about the series, but everything else (at least that's going on in the manga) is pretty interesting so I have held on.

How far past that did you see, out of curiosity?

Seemed to me that things stayed pretty desperate even after that, especially since
Spoiler: show
he's kind of incompetent, compared to the other titan-shifters.
Maybe that's just my impression from stuff later in the manga, though.

To be fair, I really didn't continue watching, maybe three or four more episodes. I was really turned off by that event and the people I was watching it with were even more dissapointed, so I lost both interest and my attack on titan watching group.

So did anyone else see the premiere of the English dub? After watching everything in Japanese I'm not sure quite how I feel about it yet, but I think I'll have to wait until my favorite characters make their entrance to have more of an opinion.
