Figured I'd put this here (since there was no way to shove it in between the Literature and Music sections) for any other Neil Gaiman fans about, or anyone who feels the time might be right to become a Neil Gaiman fan: BBC Radio 4 is doing an adaptation of Neverwhere with an impressive cast list. And no, the site isn't barred to non-UK viewers, at least as far as I can tell.

I haven't gotten the chance to listen to the actual play yet (given that it just started today), but here's a clip of Benedict Cumberbatch singing for it, which I can only describe as creepy-sexy.

*Bookmarks it*

I vaguely remember Neverwhere being on TV a long time ago and it sounded interesting, but I never managed to see it.

Edit:
I just listened to the Benedict Cumberbatch clip. I've heard that song somewhere before, sung by someone with a very deep voice, which made "and Christ receive thy soul" sound very portentous.

Brief history of Neverwhere: it started out as a TV show, but it didn't do so well and Gaiman felt like he didn't get to express his ideas properly with it, so he went and wrote it as a book instead. It's very good, even if you've never even been in the same hemisphere as London.

The song is the Lyke Wake Dirge and oddly enough I don't think it's ever actually sung by any character in the book, let alone Cumberbatch's- part of it is printed at the beginning of the book and then later briefly recalled by the main character. But hey, I'm not complaining.

Ah! So that's why I know it! Now I know where I heard it. It was performed by one of Birmingham University's librarians during a singing session in a primitive cottage in Wales. ;D So, nothing whatsoever to do with Neverwhere. :P

Why do I only ever find out about these dirges and poems and such only after they've been used by someone else.

It's Neil Gaiman. I think he spends his free time sitting around looking up as many weird old creepy things as he can find.

Also, the book was written in 1996. Were you collecting dirges and poems and such in 1996?

Does it matter? I'm still only finding out after the fact.

Mac has been listening to the series and I keep hearing bits of episodes (plus the whole of episode 4 today). I must put aside some time to start at the beginning and get a coherent story.

^^Well it's not like people have stopped using 'Oranges and Lemons' ironically just because somebody else did it first. You could probably get away with it.
