Mmkay, I'm back in the saddle again. This is the next part of the Dark Rose story, The Asgardian, having learned of the deal his former mistress made with the King, seeks to cause the aforementioned Curse of Scarlette to take effect. His motivation is not just to ail the arrogant king, but because the curse affects both of those who were involved in the deal, and will cause the Devil Rose to lose the fortune she took from the King in exchange for his immortality. The Asgardian sends other demons to the King thinking that "as long as you never hold another dark rose" simply means that the King will break his deal if he lies with another demon, but soon finds that isn't the case. So he seeks help from any demon who isn't loyal to the Devil Rose to reveal what "Dark Rose" means.

"Asgardian Heights/Niflheim Delights"

aloft in heaven a deity schemes
while demons fulfill exotic dreams...

The Asgardian: "the Devil Rose she delights in gold
I must find a way to invoke the curse of old
I'll entice The King with a demon's stare
and leave the Dark Queen's treasure halls bare"

The Asgardian summons all those who answer
to send upon The King a most ravishing dancer
one by one the temptresses delight their liege
but the King seems impervious to the otherworldy siege

The Asgardian: "I do not understand, her words of deceit
the Curse should be induced with the first Rose he meets
perhaps there's another meaning, what is this Dark Rose
I'll find one unloyal enough to reveal what she knows..."

the enraged god seeks a demon most foul
calliing to the underworld with a bellowing growl
one shall reveal the secrets of their duchess
or face the wrath of a god, if they dare not confess

The Asgardian: "hear me lowly ones, send word by your crows
tell me the identity of the one called Dark Rose"

and lo, a crow, black as night does fly
towards the chamber of the agitated god of the sky
the Asgardian, awaiting the news that it brings
discovers a name, of one of those with wings...

___

I'd just like to point out at this time that despite the allusions to Norse mythology, I'm simply using those terms to avoid making direct references to heaven and hell from a religious perspective. I figure a mythological approach works better since this sort of has a dark, almost gothic vibe to it, but is still deeply entrenched in fantasy. Also, I realize that the songs don't really give much insight as to what exactly is going on, and you get more story out of my explanations at the beginning than you do in the songs themselves, so I tried to make this one a little more cohesive as far as delivering a continuous series of events without getting bogged down by details. If I was to ever make an actual album out of this, or anything similar to this, I'd just use liner notes to "fill in the blanks" so to speak.

Edit: This is hardly worth a whole new post, but worth sharing nontheless. It's a parody of "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains.

"Man in the Socks"

I'm the man in the socks
toasted in my warmth
won't you come and join me...join me

[chorus:
feel my fuzz, it's pleasant to the touch
Hanes Footwear, that's who made 'em
they who try them on, will be elated
feel my fuzz, they only cost 10 bucks]

no these can't be beat
all the others are shit
won't you buy me more...for Christmas

repeat chorus, solo, repeat chorus

This is something I needed to get out. Not really in the mood to explain it, maybe later though.

"Just Like You"

you tell me what I should say
you tell me just what I should do
but I'm not listening anymore
'cause I don't wanna be like you

save my money, save my soul
save your breath 'cause it's getting old
do what's right, do no wrong
you're always singing that same fucking song

[chorus:
tell me what to think and say
tell me how to live every day
won't listen no more 'cause I am through
I don't wanna end up just like you]

take a shower, take my pills
always be on time and always pay my bills
brush my teeth and brush my hair
live cautiously, don't live without a care

[chorus]

[bridge:
it's the same fucking thing I've heard before
closing one shut opens yet another door
be a good boy and they'll let me into heaven
but on earth I'm in hell for twenty-four seven]

save my money, save my soul
what's more important than the glitter of gold?
brush my teeth and brush my hair
it's all just for show, 'cause the devil may care

[chorus:
you want me to be just like you
get through your head, get a fucking clue
I want to be me, not a carbon copy
so just shut your mouth and let me be free]

I'm not gonna listen when you tell me what to do
'cause the last thing I'd ever want is to be like you

That sounds like a reaction to a nagging parent.

I can think of a number of people who have expressed very similar sentiments to me at various times. I think you'd find a lot of people would relate very strongly to that song and, while I don't think I've ever been in the position of having someone expecting me to be just like them, I've certainly known (and despaired over) a couple of people who have very fixed ideas and can't accept that views or lifestyles different from their own might be equally valid.

The song's simpler and less clever with language than some of your others, but it's a very good depiction of a real-life situation, that I think would speak to a lot of people. I really like it. :)

Good to see it was self-explanatory, then. Without going into details, my mom pissed me the hell off the other day.

This next one resulted from...something, I'm not sure. I was trying to write another "rage" song and I couldn't decide how to work it out, so I shuffled some things around and eventually just scratched it all...then the words for this song started coming into place from some of the things I wrote for the previous song (mostly from the chorus of this song, as the other song was somehow going to involve "casting down" the people who piss me off because I liked how it rhymed with "hit the ground") and I ended up coming up with a neat little rhyming scheme for the main verses. This is best described as a "lighthearted" black metal song...it's definitely all about hell and wanting to go there instead of heaven and whatever, but you can probably tell from some of the lines that it's not very serious-minded.

"Into Damnation"

my life is but a dying spark, so dismal
I've been living in the dark, so abysmal
as I turn to face the light, I am blinded
but in the dead of night, I'm reminded

[pre-chorus:
there's a place where all the sinners go
where chalices of blood and fire overflow
take my hand and I'll lead you there
where suffering and anguish are laid bare]

[chorus:
into damnation, on a pale horse ride
burning from within, feel the evil inside
one by one the wicked are cast down
pray your soul to keep as you hit the ground]

if you ever seek proof of sin, I can show you
turn your sight from within, look below you
intentions better left unsaid, so malicious
feasting on the souls of dead, so delicious

[pre-chorus and chorus]

give your soul unto the lord, in death
or join the vile hellish horde, on your last breath
demon's souls and forked tongues, over your head
human bones and skin strung, over trails of the dead

[pre-chorus and chorus]

[bridge:
seek redemption, the lord's exemption
from the crimes you commited in your life
fuck salvation, just choose damnation
revel in the lavishness of greed and strife]

decide now where you're going, when you die
will you join the stars all glowing, in the sky
or curse the angels say amen, to the underground
sing the song of the fallen, a demonic sound

[pre-chorus and chorus]

pray your soul to take as you break the ground
give unto the devil, for the lord has cast you down

__

Promise I'll get back into "Dark Rose" after these negative emotions that inspire stuff like...this...pass. Don't wanna channel my anger into the wrong song, basically.

This spawned from the fact that I feel like I live in a socially backwards hellhole full of nothing but idiots. It's part rage song, part social commentary, and part "this should never be taken seriously, by anyone, ever." I'll let you decide which it's more. >_>

"Country Town"

hey ya country boy, tell me what's two plus two?
if you say it's five, I'm gonna knock out your tooth
why don't you put down your fiddle and get an education
instead of wastin' time with all that self-exploration

[chorus:
you know y'all ain't got a single fuckin' ounce of class
so take that racist rebel flag and shove it back up your ass
every day, every hour, my intellect keeps goin' down
'cause I'm stuck in a backwards-ass country hick town]

y'all spend all your money at the local Wal-Mart
and sing songs about a tractor, comin' straight from the heart
you like to sit on your ass and drink a whole keg of beer
and chase off anyone who you might think is a queer

[chorus:
now who you think you gonna fool with that gal on your arm
we know it's your sister, 'cause you met down on the farm
I walk out to the lake just to watch the inbreds drown
'cause I'm stuck in a backwards-ass country hick town]

ya go to church every Sunday unless there's a NASCAR race
ya say the lord won't even notice just a single missin' face
then you come around tellin' me how to live a good life
while you go out drinkin' with your friends and cheat on your wife

[chorus:
well I don't think I wanna hang out with them good ol' boys
sayin' praise the lord and playin' with their Chevrolet toys
just don't preach to me or you'll find yourself on the ground
'cause I'm sick of this backwards-ass country hick town]

if you ain't quite got it figured out just yet, this town is full of shit
I ain't saying I'm better than you, but I sure am thinkin' it
I've never really been one to judge, but boy you make it hard
when I see your fat ass among the busted cars out in your yard

[chorus:
I don't know what I been told, but you don't know a thing
stupidity is everywhere, 'cause the morons keep breeding
tell me I should wear a smile but I think I'll keep my frown
until I get out of this backwards-ass country hick town]

I find that song quite amusing, not least because I can see a mixture of well-known stereotypes, both in the people being described in it and in the attitudes of the singer, but at the same time there are some very valid and accurate observations on people's behaviour.

I've been slacking off from finishing the Dark Rose story lately, so I decided to sit down and try to get back into it. I was rather pleased with the result.

The story continues from where The Asgardian discovered the meaning of "Dark Rose" which is one born of divine and demon blood, which his daughter is. He opens a view to the king's castle from the sky hoping to coerce the Dark Rose into visiting the castle herself, but when she doesn't relent so easily, he casts her down so that he may use her to inflict the Curse of Scarlette upon the king and reverse the Devil Rose's fortunes. This one leads directly into "A Dark Rose for the King" so anything after this one will take place after that song.

"The Day the Petals Fell"

The Asgardian: "daughter divine, come hither to me
I've a magnificient view for you to see
I've opened a way from the sky to the world
so that you may witness a new day unfurl"

curious, for her eyes had not seen
the breath of life but in her dreams
the Dark Rose gazed upon the earth
a sight not witnessed since her birth

The Asgardian: "my dear I hope you are most pleased
and your appetite for wonder not appeased
for I think you should see it from the ground
and relay my holy will to those around"

Dark Rose: "but father, I belong here in the clouds
not among humans in their towns"

The Asgardian: "true, a town is unfit for thee
but a castle awaits, just look and see"

[pre-chorus:
the sky breaks into day, an angel on her way
from heaven come down, unto unholy ground]

she peered beyond the break of light
upon the keep, a majestic sight
she dared to dream but not to fall
could she really roam those regal halls?

The Asgardian: "I beg of you, please hear me now
into a life of fortune you'll be allowed"

Dark Rose: "but I know not what lies within the keep
what may I find, but the sorrow of lonely sleep?
father, why do you encourage me to this realm?
I fear the earth shall leave me overwhelemed"

The Asgardian: "I must admit, I have much to gain
I promise you'll not feel an ounce of pain
I hope you'll forgive me, for what I've done
but I cannot ignore the sins of the wicked ones"

[pre-chorus]

[chorus:
rushing towards the deepest green
fullfillment of a divine scheme
they will know his wrath in hell
on the day the petals fell]

without a warning, without a word
the roaring wind was all she heard
she had been cast from her cloudy home
to the other world, still yet unknown

falling fast, she raised her wings
her father could not hear her sing
she tried to fly, back into the sky
but her feathers began to molt and die

[pre-chorus and chorus]

the earth came closer, approaching fast
she feared this view would be the last
her longtime dream became a nightmare
would she survive the fall, she wondered, scared

burning as she broke the sky
surely this day she would die
exiled to the war-torn earth
stripped of all her godly worth

[pre-chorus and chorus]

______

You may notice I borrowed a couple of lines in the last verse there from A Dark Rose for the King, just to give it a bit of a lead-in.

Very interesting to read the lead-up to the original song. In the light of what happened in that one, it seems quite ironic to be reading what comes across as a dialogue between a loving father and his daughter, and most especially the line, "I promise you'll not feel an ounce of pain". It's certainly building up to being a very interesting story.

I admit at first I was going to write The Asgardian as a selfish deity only interested in furthering his own ends, and that's still mostly there, but I thought it might give the story a little more emotional pull if he appeared to feel remorse despite his seemingly uncaring exterior personality. By the time this is done I hope to have all the characters more fleshed out, so they're all unique in their own way and not just some people I happen to be writing into the songs just to have it make sense.

I wanted to write a Halloween song today, and I somewhat succeeded. I couldn't think of anything to write about, so I made a song about how zombies are in too many video games these days.

"Zombies Everywhere"

they eat your neighbors, they eat your brains
they're in your buildings and on your trains
they seem to pop up in the strangest places
'cuz we can't get enough of their rotting faces

[chorus:
zombies, zombies, everywhere!
snacking on flesh without a care
zombies, zombies, everywhere!
try to fight them if you dare
zombies, zombies, everywhere!
back to life 'cuz they had one to spare
zombies are everywhere!]

on God's green earth and even on the moon
they rise again to celebrate your doom
crowding in your local shopping malls
for last minute filler you know who to call

[chorus]

how many zombies can we see bleed
before we tire of decapitated glee?
the world's chock full of the living dead
ain't you got more ideas in your head?

from Resident Evil down to Dead Rising
the undead stench is paralyzing
you know this trend is startin' to get old
like all that flesh, rotten, thick with mold

[chorus]

take a trip to Dead Island, it's all the same
lack of imagination is the one to blame
take a step back and look at what you've done
in the future we'll all kill zombies for fun

[chorus]

Haha. While I can see the serious message about lack of imagination, the song as a whole is highly entertaining and I think the first half is very amusing. I really liked it. :)

I'm still trying to get back into continuing the Dark Rose story, but it's difficult since, when I had nearly everything down, I didn't feel like writing, and now that I am in the mood to write again I've mostly forgotten where I was going to go with it. Some pieces are still there, so I just need to put them together again. In the meantime, I've written this song to satisfy my need to rhyme...or something. I'm not sure, I just wanted to do another song with a good "bounce" to it. Not sure when it turned into a song about nuclear genocide, but even with that theme running through I think it's got a good flow to it.

"Irradiated and Terminated'

calling down the thunder
torn and rent asunder
destruction is a sentiment of wonder
his insanity releases
the world torn into pieces
hounds of the devil cut from their leashes

[pre-chorus:
incarnate of violent decay
death shall walk the earth today
wash the light of life away
convictions of a mind astray]

boiling point of rage
demons flee their cage
abhorrent words bleeding from every page
casting weaklings down
send them underground
skulls bejewel the throne, death takes his crown

[pre-chorus]

[chorus:
torture, agony, suffering, pain
cries for mercy met with disdain
anger, hatred, malice, strife
the misery that ends all life
revenge for these unjust afflictions
carried out thru total extinction]

forced into this state
thru lunacy and hate
humanity must end for a clean slate
satisfied eradication
forged thru toxic radiation
and with the fire comes death's sweet salvation

[pre-chorus and chorus]

[bridge:
the world bleeds til it's bitter death
sickening air drains you of your breath
fallout spreads thru every nation
a madman's lust, your termination]

all that lived is gone
mother earth's swan song
a picture perfect vision, no right or wrong
death collects his souls
revelling in the tolls
what drives a man to kill, only he knows

[pre-chorus and chorus]

I've got a social commentary-ey song that I thought up earlier. Essentially it's about how people are having children at younger and younger ages, yet they're not doing anything to take care of these children or teach them anything, so these kids are probably going to grow up to be deadbeat drug addicts. Therefore the next generation will consist of nothing but people who can't make anything of themselves due to an improper upbringing. (hence the title)

"The Next Degeneration"

procreation has gone way too far
another teenager with cesarian scars
parents and teachers lower the bar
to make way for the next superstar

[chorus:
too many children, not enough hope
first one to drop out gets the dope
sliding down the endless slope
humanity's at the end of it's rope]

born to a sixteen year old whore
education? we're much too poor
why go to school, what good's it for?
you can get a job at the liquor store

[chorus]

raised up on drugs like weed and coke
begging on the street, you say you're broke
while your lungs fill up with cigarette smoke
on the ashen atmosphere you'll choke

[chorus]

a penny saved may be a penny earned
you'd know that if they'd let you learn
say there's no rush, you've time to burn
indifferent, and now your future's spurned

[chorus]

There's probably enough material in the theme you've chosen for that last one to warrant a Symposium thread all of its own!

Overall I think I like your choice of language more in "Irradiated and Terminated", but I like the way you've approached the topic in this one, and I particularly liked the chorus. I felt it flowed nicely and would sound good set to music.

I just now wrote a pent-up rage...poem. I was going to write a song but I decided after a couple of lines it would work better as a poem, so I thought I'd run with that idea to make it at least a little different from my other "pent-up rage" stuff. Which is sad, because it goes to show that I have too much rage to go around and no way to get rid of it besides writing similarly themed songs and stuff. :|

"Revenge is My Name"

another day trapped inside this hell
another hour spent inside my shell
trying to defend myself from this pain
but with every minute my patience wanes
people testing me to see when I'll break
people deriding me, how much can I take?
trying to be passive, but I'm going insane
hate is tresspassing, sneaking into my brain
with every second the timer counts down
when I explode you'd better hit the ground
'cause if you think you can stand in my way
you'll soon find there's a toll you've to pay
I've come collecting, your blood is the course
desperately searching for signs of remorse
you'll see I have none, and you're to blame
it's nice to meet you, revenge is my name

This is just another rhyme thing, which even extends to the title. I think the theme is kinda self-explanatory.

"Nature Implores, We Ignore"

global warming, no warning, the ice caps deforming
hurricanes forming, storming, distorting
wake up to a blackened sky in the morning
politicians are conforming, retorting, ignoring
open your eyes to see all their lies contorting

[chorus:
the world is coming to it's end
yeah it's just around the bend
mother nature can't defend
against pollution that we send
hear her whisper in the wind
just ignore it and pretend
that it'll go away my friends
but these wounds we cannot mend]

continents are sinking, what the hell are we thinking?
resources we're drinking, reaping, the'yre shrinking
natural balance thrown off while we're sleeping
to conclusions we're leaping, to death we are creeping
as we block out the sounds of our dear mother weeping

[chorus]

this is what it's down to, ignorance: nothing new
dodge the issue, it's not true, sway us with your voodoo
rallying your people, but none will stand behind you
our lifetime is through, now there's nothing left to undo
ravaged and askew, we've lost everything of value

[chorus]

____

"Lonliness and Love"

did I really want to let you go?
now I don't even really know
so many things I want to say
since the day you went away
I pretend that you're nothing
but I'm really just covering
for my true feelings inside
the ones I always try to hide
is this feeling lonliness or love?
I know it must be one of the above
despite what I may feel for you
I know our time together's through
no time to get a second chance
not that I could change your stance
I know I hurt you and you hurt me
but when I dream it's you I see
so I hope you're flying free like a dove
because I'm chained to lonliness and love

___

I'll explain this one later.

I very much like both of those last two. I particularly like the first verse of "Nature Implores, We Ignore": I love the way it sounds, with its barrage of rhymes and assonance. "Loneliness and Love" contains a lot of sentiments that I can really relate to. That one really spoke to me. (And did it start out as an attempt at an entry for the contest, or is it just coincidence that it includes the word "together"? :P)

Nah, Lonliness and Love wasn't written for the contest, it was just a way for me to get my personal feelings towards my ex-wife out. I don't know if I miss her because I'm lonely or because I still love her, or both, but despite what we went through there are times I just want nothing more than to have my old life with her back. Then there are other times I'm glad we're separated because it gave me a chance to start my life over...right now I'm kinda in the middle, but yesterday was one of those days where I just wanted to have someone to go home to.

This next song is something that I wanted to do for the last day or two. I wanted to write a song from the point of view of someone who feels...just a little wrong in the head sometimes, but it's not the bad kind of insane that turns people into serial killers, it's the good kind of insane that...I dunno, makes them think of stuff like this. >_> I set my mind to "irreparably damaged" mode and cranked it out as if it were me that was going insane (which I may well be, but, again, it's the good kind XD) and I think it turned out pretty much exactly how I wanted.

"Insanity is the Least of My Worries"

I'm sick of life's motherfucking demands
I cannot live by the ten commands
like the trickery of sleight of hand
sanity is gone and I don't understand, why

every little thing has to fall apart, and
when I put it back together it takes me right to the start
this story isn't for the faint of heart
hallucinogenics sent from a poison-tipped dart

clawing my way through this oblivion
I'm turning inside out in my delerium
the whole of the parts doesn't equal the sum
seeking the truth down in the barrel of a gun, now

who are you, and who am I?
there ain't no answer from the face in the sky
what the hell is the reason why
we're born on this earth just to turn around and die

nowhere, no how, no one can ever say
just what it is that makes a man this way
the stage is set and we're ready to play
but the star of the show has gone astray, so

don't ask me 'cause I don't know
the cracks in my brain have now begun to show
downward spiral, an all-time low
but insanity is just the least of my woes

it's the least of my worries, the least visible scar
it's the truth and the lies, cast out to the stars
I went over the edge but still I'm not too far
me and I will tell you that we are who we are, we are

a little fucked up but that's okay
I didn't plan on fitting in with you anyway
I don't need help so just go away
you better get over it 'cause I'm here to stay

I'm motherfucking insane...til the end of days
on you knees and pray...that I'll go away
but I feel no shame, for my defect brain
and I'm here to say, that I'm here to stay
and I love being so goddamn insane!!!

I like the title, for a start! :D

As with many of your other pieces, you have a very interesting selection of rhymes and half-rhymes. I was also rather taken with the way you had an extra word following the rhyme in some lines. I'm guessing you did it to fit in with the rhythm you imagine for the song, but I found it a very nice little touch. It turned those lines from simple rhyming verse into something rather unusual and original, and I liked the effect it had on the structure.

My brain has been too much of a mess to form a cohesive song, so I decided to try to get back into writing with something that I'm just gonna pretty much let roll off the top of my head, whether it makes sense or not.

"Emo Screamo"

"I wanna cut myself with a knife"
yeah right, you love your fuckin' life
"nobody cares, nobody loves me"
while all your fans get your MP3s

[chorus:
emo, screamo
it's all a goddamn freak show
emo, screamo
seems suicide is much too slow]

"I want to shout, I want to scream!"
don't combine that with your music dreams
"no one listens, 'cause no one cares!"
'cause you look like an idiot with that hair

[chorus]

"noone will miss me when I die"
'cause another band follows in your stride
"life's so unfair for me alone"
'cause a mansion is where you call home?

[chorus]

"I'm depressed, down on my luck"
there's medicine for that, you emo fuck
"no one knows just what it's like"
yeah right, they heard you screaming in the mic

[chorus]

I'm sure that will strike a chord with quite a few people. There are plenty of rich, privileged, but emo celebrities, and it's hard to be sympathetic in such circumstances. I think that's come out rather successfully. :)

This next one is the result of my frustrations with life, my parents, people in general, and...just everything, really.

"Down to Size"

I'm fed up, frustrated
I feel belittled, and berated
can't relax, can't cut loose
your hand is tightening the noose
under thumb, far too long
won't be long, I'm too far gone
indifference, ignorance
still the same fuckin' song and dance

[chorus:
you see what you see on the outside
but you don't know what's within
you hear what you hear on the flipside
but I know you don't ever listen
you don't realize, you're paralyzed
waiting for the day the world dies
my time to rise, open your eyes
cut out all the bullshit and lies
'cause you'll never cut me down to size]

you implore me, ignore me
you lay the blame before me
consequence, I'm deserving
your voice is goddamn unnerving
keep quiet, shut your mouth
my sanity has gone too far south
compromise? a foolish attempt
you only further nourish contempt

[chorus]

[bridge:
talk down to me like I don't know
your arrogance is all you show
your high and mighty show and tell
bought you a ticket straight to hell
the truth is all yours to dilute
to that I wave a middle finger salute
if I saw through your eyes I'd be blind
blazin' on down a one-track mind]

[chorus]

I especially like the chorus of this one. I think the way you've expressed the sentiments is very effective, and I like the rhyme scheme that you've used.

The people who brought you "Emo Screamo" would like to present...An emo song!

"The Test"

I don't know how I can cope with this
any day now I'm liable to slit my wrists
every single day is a test I must take
every single day my will starts to break

take a seat now and begin the test
I haven't studied at all, I must confess
time's up! turn in your paper
we'll grade you now and bill you later

I need to rest, I just need to breathe
I need a place where I can find reprieve
get away from this life run away and hide
as my thoughts slowly turn towards suicide

take a seat now and begin the test
you'll never pass, so just do your best
time's up! turn in your paper
am I a victim or just a self-hater?

reality has come to a screeching halt
who's to blame? I'm dealing out the fault
I'm pointing fingers and calling names
'cause I'm losing at my own killing game

take a seat now and begin the test
my final answer? a graveyard rest
time's up! turn in your paper
failure drips from a blood-soaked razor

the test is over, I have not passed
graduation at the bottom of the class
still I don't know why it came to this
perhaps I'll find solace in death's sweet kiss

____

I've had a case of writer's block for the past few weeks, so this isn't exactly the best thing I could have done to break it, but it's a start, I guess. I dunno why but I keep starting songs and not finishing them, so just being able to get through this one was enough to make me happy.
