Figured it might be good to have a static thread to refer to in the future as I (hopefully) get to writing and recording music more often. Writing isn't my strong suit, so it'll probably mostly be occasional demos, but I'll try to get some stuff uploaded.

I'll see what sneak peaks I can share of music for Summer Rose Court, but for now I guess I'll start thethread off with a cover. Dirt In The Ground by Tom Waits. I might do a more fully arranged cover tomorrow, this was just for fun today, guitar and vocals in one take (thank god for the new microphone so I don't have to record room audio with my video camera...).

That's a nice first demo and I'll certainly enjoy hearing more of your music, especially Summer Rose Court if you're able to post any.

Is that a picture of you eating the head of a gummy serpent? Whoever that is looks rather frighteningly happy.

[Insert some emoticon expressing jokiness here.]

As for the demo itself, it isn't bad, though the audio quality makes me somewhat reluctant to really comment, as what I remark might simply be a vagary of whatever recording equipment. Your vocals sound fairly nice, but what I can make out of the lyrics is rather depressing...

Oh yeah, that's actually a EQ filter after the fact, not the original audio quality. Cut a lot of the highs and lows, leaving the mids, and added the echo. And yeah, fairly depressing too.

And I didn't end up doing the full arrangement today, too worn out after classes, but to demonstrate the actual sound quality of the mic, here's a quick 1-track demo of "Shit Out Of Luck" by Greg Brown. Similarly depressing, I guess.

I actually like depressing music since for me music has to elicit some kind of emotional response. I particularly like the guitar in that one.

Another thing I've heard from a professional musician/songwriter: "I try to write happier songs sometimes, but sad words rhyme better."

As promised, Dirt In The Ground as a fuller demo instead of that one-track nonsense. Now I just need to keep writing for original recordings.

Lyrics are hard.

And anotherhappened just by circumstance today. It's a bit sloppy, but I was really just making up the musical aspect of it as I went along, and I don't care much to effort to fix it up since it's a non-commercial demo based on someone else's poem.

It may not be perfect, professional quality but I like the music very much. I find both the style and the guitar tone very appealing.

(By the way, since you seem so far to be focusing more on the actual music rather than writing lyrics, would you object if I were to move this thread into the music section? )

Sure, I wouldn't object. Figured since this is in the creative sub-board it would fit here, but wasn't sure.

Actually, now you've mentioned that, odd as it may seem, the Gallery is probably the right place. We used to have a subforum called the Café, where miscellaneous art, including music, was posted, but all the art forums got merged due to insufficient activity to justify separate ones. I've just checked and the music posts are all still in there. I'll move it to there.
