Don't listen to him. We once got played an adventure that should have taken five minutes. It was basically: go in two-room cave, disarm trap, grab weed, run back out. It took us two hours.

He was the DM.

Although, probably the worst game we ever had was the one where we all sat down, playing for about ten minutes during which there was much stuttering on my part (I was DMing) and much wanting to burn random things down on the part of the players, before we all realized that none of us knew why we were there and didn't actually want to play that much anyway, whereupon we ditched the game, played Apples to Apples for a couple hours, and then proceeded to embark on what has to have been the most badly executed snipe hunt in all of history.

Something's wrong with your DM. I mean, seriously.
I was the DM. And have been DMing for over two years now.

An adventure typically takes up to 3 to 4 hours to run to completion, longer if the encounters and material are lengthy. It can be done in less time at the cost of the immersive roleplaying experience; it's just not possible to run a full adventure, encounters, roleplaying and all, in 45 minutes. Unless you only have a few encounters, and limit it pretty much just to that, which makes it a hack'n'slash adventure and not a roleplay at all.

I have my gripes with 4.0. But I also had my gripes with 3.5. 4.0 is simpler, and easier to DM, therefore it flows more easily, and I don't have to break every little while to check out some obscure rule. I don't have the time to memorize every rule in 3.5, but the 4.0 rules are easier to understand for both me and my players; as a matter of fact, I've just introduced two new players who were hardcore 3.0 and 3.5 players to 4.0, and they LOVED the system.

And Cataphrak is exaggerating, mostly. A typical encounter with us runs by in between 15 and 45 minutes, depending upon the complexity and number of enemies. For example, at the moment I'm running a mixed skill challenge/combat encounter that is likely going to take quite a while, simply because there's one hell of a lot going on.

Yeah. And Noah was a barbarian with an axe. Never, ever, ever let Noah have an axe. He's one of your typical people who thinks it's cool to be insane, so purposefully does random crap and makes it difficult for everyone else.

Ah. Encounter. One encounter does not make an adventure. Most of my adventures ran about 5 hours, but we couldn't compress them into 45 minutes if we tried. I was skeptical about the compression. 4.0 doesn't make things that easy.

Well, no, but any encounter that takes 5 hours should count as one.

Or maybe it was simply a ridiculously well-thought out encounter with difficult objectives, a massive scale and a truly sadistic DM unleashing his worst against a disparate group of hapless amateurs who were too jumped up on Red Bull and Root Beer to care? (See: Bandit Fortress, Krisz you bastard)

See, I'd count one of those encounters as an adventure.

Only it was part three of our adventure. We had already hunted down another group of bandits on the road, and finished off the sentries (one of our party pretended to be a "really scary bird" thanks to his ranks in his Animal Empathy and Intimidate skills, it kinda worked...)

I stand by the fact that you're all fucking morons for not noticing that the bandits seemed to appear from out of nowhere in the forest, clearly having not exited the front gate... one must always check for secret entrances.

Wait- it didn't? I think Krisz failed DMing 101.

Don't push it...

He made up that adventure on the spot, so it was a tolerable oversight.

Well, okay. I can understand that. I made up some pretty bad adventures on the spot in my day.
Such as placing a deinonychus on the top floor of an abandoned library.

I never took DMing 101. I was just DMing because, of Giron, Tanooki, Ixaix, and Kiseki, I was the best choice. By far the best choice.

I told you there WAS the possibility of a gate. You guys were just more interested in scaling the wall.

And Beau was more interested in scaling... jumping into the wall and falling down.

Our fighter once scaled a wall...

To tie a rope around a battlement, tie bytes in it on his way down, so I could climb up and shoot the two sleeping hobgoblins.

Then I tricked the goblins on the ground floor (4 goblins and 2 hobgoblins, playing cards) into thinking that they were insulting each other, so they got in a fight. We only had to fight 2, rather than 6, because all the rest were either dead or bleeding out.

Good times, good times.

No, good times is when the Monk manages to jump dramatically off his warhorse and INTO the wall with a comical splat and is outclimbed by a pair of infantrymen in heavy armour.

Yeah. Or when our sorcerer stuck his spear into the skull of the goblin climbing up the ladder, which made him fall onto the one beneath him, thus spawning our party motto.

"Dude, wipe!"

Once Krisz managed to roll three natural 20s in a row three times on consecutive rounds.

We don't let him use that D20 anymore...

No, he didn't. The next time we played, he rolled the dice again to prove that the D20 wasn't weighted...

He rolled a 20...

Hmm... sounds a bit like me. Which unfortunately tends to bite me in the ass when it comes to games wherein high roles aren't always best, such as Monopoly.
