Oh joy, sleeping on the ship. Though my bed is probably comfier than what I'll be sleeping on tonight.

Nephie could tell that Coral was trying not to grimace at the thought of getting up so early, and elbowed her in the ribs to keep her quiet. Unlike Coral, she was a morning person. Every day, she was up before dawn, as energetic as if she'd slept till noon. Those who were not morning people found it slightly irritating sometimes, that she could get so little sleep and be fine. She shook her head slightly, bring herself back to earth.

"Is that all? I need to get back and help Cassius with something." There was a faint note of resignation in her voice. "I suppose I should also tell him what he missed here."

"Sol?!" Cassius growled, "You told Sol? Of all the cursed luck..." Cassius knew it would be bad if anyone other than those who were necessary knew they were hauling someone who had actually been given their abilities by a demon. However, despite his words, it could have been worse. As much as Cassius loathed to admit it... Sol was a good man. Still, there was no reason for Nurich to know that. Best to keep him scared in line, and his mouth--or rather, his hands--silent. "You tell no one about this, am I understood?"

Cassius then realized exactly what situation he was in. It was dusk, and a harsh twilight coated the harbor. "Damn, I'm late!" He hadn't even recognized Nurich's response, but turned back to him as he unmagicked the door and unlocked it, "You will stay here, on board this ship, until I and Caius return. There are options for you Nurich, but you aren't going to like them!" He bolted from the door as he buckled on his kodachi and headed for the inn. It took only a moment to get there (there was no mistaking the inn/tavern, its windows were completly shut up and a few disgruntled sailors were leaning against the back wall and swearing, obviously rejected from their daily drunken rumble). He calmed himself and snuck in, just as Caius was asking if there were any questions. So it's already over. Another briefing missed. Nephie asked a generic, but quite needed, timeframe question, which Caius answered without hesitation. Cassius made his way over behind the counter and took a glass, filling it with some smelly concoction that would hopefully burn his stomach. He needed it.

Nurich looked on as Cassius lecture him. He didn't have to scream at him to get his point across. Despite his... handicap, Nurich was very capable of understanding instructions, as well as following them. He understood perfectly well why he was not to tell anyone. Of course, he had lived with it so long that he thought nothing of it, but now that it had been brought up, of course he wouldn't tell anyone. As Cassius bolted out of the door, Nurich lay back on the bed and waited.

Nephie shook her head after asking the question.

"Nevermind." Her finely tuned ears had picked up the sound of Cassius sneaking in. Before the night was over, she'd have to ask what he'd been doing to miss the briefing. Something to do with Nurich, definately, but what exactly?

Caius looked up as the sound of the door opening and closing once again reached his ears. He could tell who it was from the sound of footsteps before the newcomer even came into view. His eyes fixed onto the newly arrived legionnaire officer.

"Ah, Captain von Holt, late as usual. Captain Leuce will fill you in on what you need to know but first, I'll need a status report on that fellow you took in this afternoon."

"Those are brave men," he told Ser Balon in admiration. "Let's go kill them."

Cassius threw back his head as the vile liquid sloshed down his throat. He scowled at Caius. "I'll talk to you about it later." He trusted that the intentions of keeping that particular subject under wraps would be understood. But then again, with Caius, who could tell?

He poured himself another glass, noting to himself how horrid the stuff was.

Caius nodded once. With a movement of his hand, he signalled Hawkins and his aide to clear the figurines off the table as the Captain-General rolled up the maps and passed them to their designated bearers one by one.

"Well, if that's everything, then it would be best if you all went to your quarters. I've had accomodations arranged, but I haven't assigned individual rooms to individual officers. Now, there are sixteen of you and only ten rooms so some of you will have to share. I'm going upstairs now. I'll leave you to figure our arrangements for yourselves. Good night."

With that Caius nodded to each of his officers and turned for the stairs, his lips tilted in a grin to himself..

Cassius lifted slightly from his dark mood when Caius added that bit a bout sharing rooms. Nobody ever wanted to bunk with a senior officer, so they ended up with each other. Seeing as Caius undoubtedly already had his choice (by the fact that he was laready retreating, grinning at some silent joke), and the only other superior officer was back at Mobius Legion HQ, there was only one viable option for both Cassius and his roommate. He swept out from behind the counter, rushing to Nephie's side. Once there, he linked arms with her so they were walking side by side.

"So, which side of the room will be yours, and which shall be mine tonight?" He smiled wolfishly.

As Caius walked away, Nephie gritted her teeth and resisted the urge to throw something at the back of his head. At least, not now. She didn't want to make him look bad in front of those he was supposed to be commanding. But later... The glare she was giving him would have made normal people cower in terror in the nearest corner. Of course, Caius wasn't normal...

She was on her way out, hoping that Cassius would have missed what Caius'd said, when she found her arm linked with his, and she sighed, knowing it had been a pointless hope.

"I don't care, as long as you STAY on your side." With that, her arm was disconnected, then linked it with Tally's instead, her other arm with Malaysia.

"Cummon Nephie, lets go before you do something you'll regret."
"Regret?" As they walked away, Nephie raised one eyebrow skepticaly.
"It would dwell on your conscience."
"Not to mention what Caius would do to you."
There was a heavy sigh of mock defeat, and then, as soon as they were out of hearing distance for even Cassius, Nephie was submitted to thwaps on the head a merciless teasing. No matter how many times she said that she wasn't interested in Cassius, she was ignored.

"Shush. There's the warehouse. I wish I could spend some time with you guys, but I have to get back to the inn and my... roomate." Some of Nephie's platoon had gathered around to greet their captain, and they all laughed. "Don't worry Captain, he'll behave." "Unless he wants hsi jaw broken." "Again." "Hey! That was an accident! And it wasn't actually broken." "Broken, cracked, big difference."

With a last eye roll, Nephie said goodnight, then headed off back towards the inn.

When Nephie went back inside, Caius was at the balcony leading to the rooms on the second floor, leaning over the bannister and looking down into the common room for someone. When Nephie arrived back into the open area of the ground floor, it became obvious that the Captain-General was looking for her.

"Captain Leuce! Head back for the ship and escort our, ahem, visitor to my room. Captain von Holt! Meet us there, it's the last room down the hall, the smallest one. I expect you both up here as fast as you can."

Caius nodded and turned towards his own room.

"Those are brave men," he told Ser Balon in admiration. "Let's go kill them."

Nephie nodded, turned, and took off toward the ship, as fast as she could go. If anyone asked, she could just say she was following orders.

The wind whipped past her face as she ran, blowing back her hood and sending strands of hair whirling around her face. Her feet barely seemed to touch the ground. If anyone had seen her, they might have thought she was flying. But there were few people out on the streets this late, and once she got close enough to the dock she slowed to a more normal run.

"Nurich, come with me. Caius wants to see you." Breathing just a tiny bit heavier than normal, Nephie stood in the open doorway of Cassius's room, without bothering to put up her hood. "Cummon. You can run, right? He said to get back as fast as we could, and I plan on taking that seriously."

((Er, last 1337 posted, Nurich was still in Cassius' room. :/ ))

Seeing as Nephalae was apparently being to spirit the experiment to the inn, Cassius didn't waste any time heading up to the room Caius had directed them too. Of course, he also grabbed a bottle of some slightly better tasting wisky from behind the counter as well.. Once he had dragged himself up the stairs and entered the small room, he took a swig from it.

"Would you like the story now, or shall I wait until Nephalae and the experiment show up?"

Nurich nodded. Of course he could run. Just because he had one disability didn't mean he couldn't run. He sprinted with Nephie across the dock, back to the tavern. It was a good little run, more than he had run in a long while. It felt good to be back on his feet. He bolted through the open door just ahead of Nephie, pausing inside to let his guide take him to Caius's room.

Nephie ran a little slower as she and Nurich ran back to the inn, and laughed when he bolted ahead to beat her there.

"It's up this way." On the way to the stairs, Nephie spotted a bottle of high quality blueberry juice, and nabbed it.

It wasn't exactly a long walk to Caius's room, so they made it there quickly. Nephie opened the door, and, seeing Cassius still standing, sat on the bed and leaned back against the wall, closing her eyes. After a moment, she opened them, and sat up, pulling her cloak off as she did so. She was still wearing the same clothes she had been at dinner, though the bottoms of the pants had a thin ring of mud around them.

"So, what happened?"

By the time Nephie and Nurich had arrived at the inn, Caius was sitting behind a small writing desk that he had somehow prevailed upon the innkeeper to place inside for the duration of his stay. He was leaning forward over a neat stack of parchments and maps, as well as several heavy tomes. He usually had a few books on military history or tactics availiable, he tried to read them as often as possible but in this case, he was just keeping occupied. The moment the door opened the Captain-General looked up.

"Ah! Captain Leuce, Nurich! Make yourselves comfortable."

He said, extending his hand towards two exquisitely carved and varnished ladderback chairs standing in the corner of the room; a luxury usually reserved for nobility and the very upper crust of the merchant class. Turning to Cassius, who had already done so, Caius didn't waste any time.

"Captain von Holt, what are our options?"

"Those are brave men," he told Ser Balon in admiration. "Let's go kill them."

"Nothing Nephie. I suppose it doesn't matter now, so I'll get straight to the point," he gestured broadly at Nurich, "this...experiment, is the result of a deal made between Vykkian mages and a demon. As to getting his voice back, well, it can't be done. The demon technically received it in a 'fair' deal, so we can't demand it back, even if we could succeed in somehow managing to summon the same demon." Cassius gave a short, sharp laugh, "The only way you actually could get your voice back would be if a nymph gave it to you. How they do it is beyond me, but they can some interesting things nymphs. Not that you could eve get that to happen, even if you did meet one. Bloody nymphs..."

Cassius trailed off, flicking his eyes over to Nephie to catch a reaction before moving on.

"However! This is not to say there aren't options open to you Nurich. While we cannot get your voice back, there is a chance you could speak again." He took a long gulp from the whiskey bottle. "If Nephie here feels like helping, then it may be possible to steal somebody--or something-- else's voice. It would be very difficult, if I do say so myself, but between myself, Nephie, and a couple of my best guys, we might be able to pull it off. Course, there are risks. Rather large ones."

Cassius grinned evilly, "Yes, we can certainly give you the mouth of an ass Nurich, work for you?"

Nurich already had charcoal and parchment out, writing a single sentence on the yellowed material. Depends, he wrote. Wiseass, dumbass, smartass, or just a donkey?

Nephie held perfectly still as soon as Cassius mentioned nymphs, being careful not to reveal anything on her face. But when he mentioned the second option, she bolted straight up, fire in her eyes.

"NO. I will NOT allow you to steal someone's voice. That's just wrong. We're trying to solve the problem here, not redirect it to someone else. I don't know about you guys, but it seems very... unethical to steal someone elses voice just to give Nurich back his. That just makes things worse."

The fierce expression on her face didn't soften, partly due to the inner war going on inside Nephie's head.

A nymph can give him his voice back... That's the only way if I don't want the second thing to happen... but I can't tell them. And I'm not a full nymph anyway, so I don't know if I could do it even if they knew. So I guess there's no point in telling. We'll just have to find a third option.

Caius nodded slowly, working the idea over in his mind. There was no way around it. It really wasn't something that anyone would want to make a decision on. Then again, he knew what the right choice was and there was another way.

"No von Holt. We aren't going to do anything drastic unless we have no other options. Keep it there as an option, a last resort in case we exaust all other options. If there really is no other feasible way, then we'll return to this discussion then. You did mention something else, something about a Nymph. Could you elaborate on that? Aren't they just traveller's tales?

"Nymphs? I can assure you they're quite real. Though, you can't believe everyone who tells you they've seen one. I myself have never had the pleasure of beholding one myself. Apparently, they've all but disappeared from the entire world outside Butea. Though, why they would remain there is just about as big a mystery as everything else about them. they fleet about the woods and isolated ponds, fleeing when someone else comes along. However, there are a few legends of note that mention actual contact with nymphs. Argon the Strong--he's elven of course--supposedly once contacted one, the nymph tricked him into giving it his will aparently. After that, he became Armon, the Bard. Utterly prepostrous. Then there are the suductress stories. The Chronicles of Hyde--elves again--say that one of the groups three ships was destroyed when the men were seduced by a group of syrenes, those are a variety of water nymphs. There are tales of better experiences though. Two I can think of. In one, an unnamed elf recieves the gift of his wife bearing child after a nymph found him sobbing in the forest. And the other one, incidentally the only one that involves a human contacting a nymph, tells another unnamed fellow gallavanting around until he found one of the last places of direct cross over between this world and the Netherworld. He killed a demon and the demon's parent, guradian, whatever they have, stole the man's soul and bound it to his armor. A nymph found him and in an took pity on him. the nymph apparently tricked the demon and took the magic needed to undo the soul binding. Of course, the nymph restored the man to his body and then promptly turned around and turned him into a tree."

Cassius took a breath, and yet another drink of the whiskey. He'd have to stop soon, elves had a lower tolerence for alcohol than their human cousins.

"All in all, I know they exist, but you'll never get anything from them. A bunch of ridiculous children with too much power for their own good. Then again, all nymphs are female, and all reports say that they're nude or otherwise scantily clad..."
He smiled.

"YOU PERVERTED BASTARD!" Nephie's fierce expression had turned to one of furious disgust, and everything in the room that wasn't bolted down flew at Cassius, and she drew as much moisture as she could from the air. The air was humid, so she got plenty, and had most of it soak him. But one ball froze into a good sized ball of ice, then hit Cassius right in the balls as hard as Nephie could make it. Even if he was wearing protection, it would hurt quite a bit.

"Don't. You. Ever. Talk. Like. That. AGAIN." Her eyes were so dark a green they were almost black, and they blazed with a level of fury that Nephie rarely felt. Even if Cassius was under the influence of alcohol, she wasn't about to let him spew that sort of trash in front of her.

Nurich quickly stood back. He would never have expected Nephie to do something so rash as sucker punch another member of the crew, especially one on par with herself. Cassius must have really hit a nerve with that nymph thing.

Although it did give Nurich a bit of pleasure to see Cassius doubled over, groaning in pain.

Caius remained calm through Nephie's whole outburst, calmly catching and setting down the smaller objects which had missed Cassius and ended up within arms reach. He remained stoicly calm even as a vase soared over the elven captain's head and shattered against the Captain-General's face.

"Keep your mind out of the gutter Captain von Holt. If you can't hold your alcohol then I'll hold it for you."

The Elven inability to speak coherently after imbibing large amounts of alcoholic beverages had proved quite a boon for humanity in the past. There were stories about how, two thousand years ago, an enterprising Vykkian marquis had broken an elven siege of the Vykkian capital Tien Shan by replacing one of the thirsty besieging army's water shipments with pure grain alcohol. By the end of the week, half of that army had died of alcohol poisoning, the other half were too busy making lewd jokes to notice that their siege camp had suddenly sprouted flames. Nonetheless, the emergence of this trait at this particular point in time was quite disturbing. It would have to be dealt with.

"I'll detail a unit to look for other solutions upon our return to Terra. In the mean time, I will have the archivists at the Royal Academy look into finding and making peaceful, respectful contact with the Butean elves on the subject of finding a nymph who's willing to help us. Nurich, if you can find your way back to the ship, then you may go."

He turned to Cassius and Nephie. The look on his face was, well if it's appearance had to be defined with a single phrase, said phrase would have to be 'Yes, you are both going to die, very, very horribly.' in a very calm, yet ice hard sort of way. The fact that a small trickle of blood had now started from the gash on his forehead the vase had caused only made it worse.

"Captain Leuce, Captain von Holt, an additional word with both of you."

"Those are brave men," he told Ser Balon in admiration. "Let's go kill them."

Nurich nodded, quickly exiting the room to leave the senior officers alone. He wound his way back through the docks to the ship, suddenly turning sharply and sprinting back the way he came, counting the seconds in his head.

Living in the limelight, the universal dream for those who wish to seem.
Those who wish to be must put aside the alienation,
Get on with the fascination,
The real relation,
The underlying theme.

Immediately, the anger on Nephie's face changed to chagrin.

"Oh, Caius, I'm sorry! Lemme fix that. I didn't mean to hit you!" She stood up. "Please let me fix that. Please."
