A rather large Room presently containing nondescript Furnishings including a Table, three Chairs, one of which is at a Desk, a Bed, two empty Bookcases, a Nightstand, a few Devices the Purposes of which are unknown to its new Inhabitant, and other Things he imagines must be commonplace aboard the Ship. The Desk faces a Wall with three large square Windows looking out over a Sea of Stars. The Room communicates with a Bathroom and two Storage-Cupboards, which, upon first Entry, are empty. Overall, it looks as though it might have been prepared for somebody in a remote Past, but was never once before used.

When Timothy first stepped in, he was uncertain what to expect; it was not a bad Room at all, though rather plain, and he could see quite a lot of Stars from it, and the Starscape was quite different from that of his own World. He supposed it would change often, which would be nice, though the Windows might want curtaining eventually — they looked rather bare as they were. He very quickly made away with any settled Dust, and then seated himself in one of the Chairs and gestured about and asked 'which of these Devices will allow me to make Clothing? I've some Ideas already, though I don't know what, exactly, can be made...'

One ran a quick check of the room's devices and caused the panel beside what looked like a large, open-faced cupboard inset in the wall to give an alertive beep and a couple flashes.

"That one does. If you would like to select a style and colours, I had your measurements more accurately taken by the ship's internal sensors on your way here." The PAD's screen filled with myriad articles of clothing in many lines, their icons lining up but far too small to be seen with much detail. "That may be an overabundance of choice." The screen cleared and pulled up some simpler interfaces, mostly text input but with some radio buttons as well. "Just select what articles you'd like, and then you can search by keyword to narrow down a selection you like for each one.

Timothy examined the List intently, and eventually settled on a rather simple dark, short-sleeved Shirt which would fit him rather snugly, and hopefully would keep him cool, three rather long Pieces of black Fabric with no certain Function, Trousers rather like the ones he was already wearing, less the Bloodstains and with a few more Pockets, fresh Socks, another Piece of Cloth of uncertain Function — this one white, a rather plain Jacket in a dark Blue-Green which fastened with something called a Zipper (mostly because he wanted to know what a Zipper was), and a Sweatshirt with a Hood which fastened in the same Fashion (he was not entirely sure what a Sweatshirt was, and very much wanted to know); the Things all looked fairly practical to him, and he wanted to make several other Things of the Purpose of which he was not entirely certain, but his better Judgement convinced him he ought not to do that for now. Most of the Clothing was not very like what he was accustomed to wearing (though the Lengths of Fabric must have had some Purpose in his Mind), but he thought it might be nice to see what, exactly, this new World had to offer. He also hoped it would help him to fit in better, since nobody looked to dress particularly formally, despite the overall lack of any unifying Style to anybody he had seen thus far.

'Now how does all of this come out?' he asked.

There was a soft chirrup from the replicator and the items appeared, nicely folded and, had it not been for the nice folding, essentially creaseless, in the replicator base.

"Like that."

Timothy marvelled a Moment at the Things appearing from nowhere, though he reminded himself they had to have been fetched somewhence, and then he went into the Bath, which bizarrely also had a Toilet; he quickly made away with the Dust, and, after finding some useful Things such as Soap, went about some various mundane Necesities and managed to have a good, hot Shower, despite the Apparatus meaning, for some bizarre Reason, he would have to stand in the Bath (which was rather too small for him) to take it. He was rather saddened when he saw it was too small for him to really lie down in it, but supposed he could always refit it later. When he was done, he made a Magic to dry himself, and then set about getting dressed.

First, he tied the white Piece of Fabric into something which would have resembled a Fundoshi (though Timothy would have found that quite the Tongue-Twister in his own Language). He would have liked to stop here and lie down on the Bed, but he had other Things to do; after looking at it a Moment, he pulled over the Shirt — he was not accustomed to Things which fit so tightly, but the Instant it was on, he ceased to take any Notice of it, and wondered of what Material it was made. He used one of the Lengths of black Material as a Belt when he pulled on the Trousers, which looked to be Linen, like his old ones, and then tucked them into his old brown leathern Boots. This left his Hair, of which he had rather a great Deal, to be tended-to: he began by making a Magic to detangle it, and then he gathered it behind and braided it (but leaft a sizeable Bit loose at the End), and secured it wrapping it up in the longest Piece of black Fabric he had gotten into what was known in his World as a Dragon's Tail; the other, he tied over his Head. Then came his Beard, which he had been meaning to change: he thinned it by Magic, and then wiped enough off to make it a little narrower. Timothy looked a fair deal Younger after this Operation, and a fair Deal less like a Royal Magician.

'I look lika a Sailor, or a Labourer, or even a Delinquent,' he remarked to himself — he had left One in the main Room — but he was not displeased with his new Appearance. 'This ought to be a little more practical than my nicer Clothing if I'm to be fighting often, and it it's warmer here than at Home, and I can't deny it feels nice.'

He left the Jacket aside, for he had no Need of it at the Moment, stretched himself out and took a last Look in the Mirror to make certain all was in Order (and it was), and then he went out to One. He would have asked her how he looked, but she had no Way of knowing, and did not even know his Appearance as it had been before. He left his old Things neatly folded in a Corner, excepting some of the Contents of his Pockets, which he transferred over, and then strapped on his Gun (which he did not anticipate seeing much Use for what remained of the Day). Finding himself quite ready, he stepped out again; he thought it best to go back to the Medical Bay on Foot — no Need to use unnecessary Magic, after all — and he might well check for Lizardmen on his Way back, though he supposed they would all have gone when the Ship was set to explode itself.

[From the Corridors]

Timothy came in after his long Bout of Pondering and making sprawling internal Monologues to find his Room exactly as he had left it. He went directly to the Replicator, which seemed to be able to make quite a Number of Things, and immediately made two rather ornate Flower-Pots which resembled Urns painted over with blue and yellow Tendrils and Flowers, and then a Sack of Soil and a Jug of Water. Then he went to the Things he had left behind and took from among them several Packets of Seeds; then he filled the two Pots with the Soil, which was very rich, and sprinkled Seeds on one. He held his Hand over it and thought of Time flowing more quickly to make the Flowers grow, and soon, rather like one of those Time-Lapse Videos which make watching Plants grow interesting, they sprouted and came into Flower, and soon there was a great Clump of golden Leaves soon spread over with many pale Flowers — a Kind of Primrose, it looked to be. He added Water every now and again, of course, when the Soil grew dry. He repeated this Exercise with the second Pot, which made something like a blue Celandines, and with several others, and soon he had a small Garden of his own, which he arranged on the Table. He then replicated something to restore the richness of the Soil, which he found was called 'Fertiliser' when he finally got the Replicator to make it, and fed the Plants and watered them, for the Soil was quite drained by growing the Plants so quickly. Once all was done, he made a Magic to clear away the excess Soil and washed his hands, and was overall very pleased with his Work.

'Chrysophytes are very pretty Things, though it really is nicer when they grow naturally; the Room wanted brightening rather too badly for that, though,' her remarked to himself — Chrysophytes are Plants with yellow Foliage — and then he turned to the PAD, which switched on easily enough, but the first Thing he found was that it wanted him to do something called Registering, which baffled him, but then he saw a Question Point, which, when he touched it, made a small Rectangle explaining what wanted doing; after quite a Bit of Time messing about with the Thing, Timothy finally got it to a Screen full of Pictures with Names that seemed to be related to their Functioning; one of them brought up a Rectangle which nearly filled the Screen and into which he could input Words, which he thought very novel. 'What a very wonderful Thing,' he muttered, and then he started making Magics which input Words, and then whole Phrases; 'marvellous,' he said, hardly audibly, 'I don't suppose I've ever had Want of such a Thing before, but it certainly is nice.'

After reading many more of the Rectangles which grew from Question Points, he discovered how to send Messages, but he did not know if anybody else had a PAD — Keris had mentioned many of them being lost on the Planet to which he had not gone, and from which they had brought the rather unpleasant yellow-haired Person who seemed to fancy Delinquency. Timothy reminded himself not to be so quick to Judge — they were very likely in similar Positions, after all, since both were quite out of their proper Elements — and hoped he... Cassius, he remembered his Name was, was faring a little better than he had.

'I imagine he finds it quite as dreary as I do — perhaps I ought to bring him a Flower,' Timothy said, and he replicated yet another Flower Pot — he was becoming quite good at it — but he was not certain what Kind of Chrysophyte might be best, but then he remembered Cassius wore a rather great Deal of Red. He looked through the Seeds until he found some Crimson Asters and grew them. The flowers were very large and a very deep red, and rather resembled Stars with five Points — they were perhaps a little bright, but he liked them well enough, and hoped the Elf would (and he could always do with more Flowers if he did not). It did not enter his Head it might see odd for him to be giving Flowers to anybody — they were certainly a common enough Gift as far as he knew, and he would have liked getting them from most anybody.

Timothy left the Crimson Aster on the Table a Moment and looked around his Things until he found an old, rather ornate Pocket-Watch; he set the Time to exactly half-past Noon, pointed the Second Hand directly to Three, and then depressed the little Knob which would open it, and it opened yet again to reveal a small Chamber inside, in which sat Syn's Cylinder, shrunken to fit. He did not know precisely what it was, but it looked all right, and it must have been something very important. He reclosed the Watch and made a Magic on it which would keep it further shut until Syn should ask him for it again. Then he put it with his other Things into a Drawer, took up his Plant, and went off to find Cassius.

[From the Secondary Hangar]

Timothy emerged perhaps an Hour before his past Self departed the Secondary Hangar and looked about his Room, which was exactly as he had left it. He seated himself at the Desk and slung his new Coat over the Bed — beneath was a rather nondescript Soldier's Blouse — and, after glancing over his metallurgical Scrawlings, began to tinker with the Dromeanthrope Weapon and searching up Data on the Lethain Corporation, and also what, exactly, a 'Corporation' was (and when he had learnt more on that, he found it one of the unsoundest Ideas he had ever heard). He also tried searching for his own Country, but came up with an Entity of which he had never before heard called the Kadan Empire; the only Thing familiar about it was the Name, which was the same as his native Sun.

He tried to push Worry from his Mind and to put more of his own Attention into the Dromeanthrope Weapon, which he was, to his own great surprise, able to magically-revert to a working State. He was able to extract Data from the Computers and Tools from the Replicator enough to be able to dismantle it quite quickly, and the Pad was even able to take Pictures of all the Pieces inside and make a detailed Schematic of it. Once he was certain of how it worked, he began making Changes so it would better accommodate him. It was most educational, and he even managed to keep the Thing working by the End, though it was not really usable for anybody else. He was especially pleased with his Idea to create very reactive Bullets — Pyrophor for better flammability, Argentum for electrical conductivity, Arsenicum because it is rather unpleasantly poisonous... he also thought to look up their Names in his New Language — Magnesium, Silver, and Arsenic, apparently — and apparently the Ferrum, Charbon, and Starkstone of the Handle were called Iron, Carbon, and Tungsten or Wulfram. He rather liked the Names in his own Language better, but it would not do to talk to others about them and not be understood.

After rather a Lot of Tinkering and getting many Things wrong and only just having come to the satisfactory Solution above described, Timothy heard Keris's Announcement again, but he felt better for having more properly armed and armoured himself, if nothing else.

Timothy gathered together his new Creations and then transported himself off roughly forty Seconds after he had first entered his Room and transported himself back, and then neatly arranged them on the Desk. He then took a Look at himself in the Mirror of his Bathroom.

'The Purple might be a little Ostentatious, and I don't suppose these People will know what a Government Magician is,' he said to himself, and then he took the Pad and researched the Style of the Kadan Empire, which was very much the same as that of the Kingdom whence he was come, only the Cut was a little snugger.

'Perhaps this,' he mused. 'It's probably more practical, since it seems as though Illyria absorbs everything and then rechristens itself after the Sun, for whatever Reason, and then takes in the Old World and some other Planets and even another Sun. Such strange Things happen after I leave.'

He used the Replicator to make yet more Clothing and said, 'I shall wear the Thing out if I am not careful, but this new Thing has more padding to it,' and changed quite quickly; he did not really look much different, except for having changed a faded purple Soldier's Coat for a faded yellow one, and the Cap and the Trousers and everything else which went with it.

'I look like an ordinary Soldier now,' he said. 'I think this will be most practical, until I discover it isn't.'

Once his Vanity was indulged, Timothy went back to playing with Flasks and Metallurgy, and made some other strange Things.

Timothy had replicated a rather large Number of Materials before Richard's Call came whencever such Things customarily did. He thought it best not to say so, but he was rather fond of having a Thing that could make numerous other Things apparently from the most Raw of Materials; though he had considered it, he had not made any more Clothing, and was still wearing the Illyrian Uniform (Illyrian Kit being designed for Comfort, he had quite forgotten he was wearing something rather unusual for him). He was quite satisfied with the Modifications he had made to the Dromeanthrope Weapon, and his Pockets were filled with all Manner of metal Rounds — Silver Bullets to carry Electricity, Pyrophor for explosive Effect, and so on... He made Magic to shrink it and stowed it in his Bag, and, after he had his other two Pistols equipped, departed his Room and made his Way through the Corridors. He had grown more adept with his Pad, and found himself less-wary as he made his Way...

[To the Bridge.]

[From Elsewhere]

Timothy appeared quite out of nowhere looking wholly dishevelled and carrying a Wad of Scrap Metal which had once been the Dromeanthrope Weapon with which he had been tinkering earlier. He made a Magic to arrange his Hair and Clothing, and looked briefly out through one of the Windows. The Stars were in different Positions, and the Scene was very nice — he supposed it ought not to be too difficult to get used to it, though every Asterism he could imagine would change upon him more quickly than might be wanted...

'I suppose I ought swear off Engineering — I'm much better for damaging Machines than mending them — and I must make a Note that Weapons don't like Ammunitions to be magically inserted,' he said to himself before he dumped it into the Rubbish Chute. Next, he went to the Desk, opened the Drawer, and removed his Watch. He broke the Magic containing the Cylinder within it and took it out and looked it over. It was an excessively strange Thing — small and dark, and there was something like a Flame flickering within — and he had no real Inkling of what it could be. He put it in an inner Pocket of his Jacket and made Magic so that it could not be found until it was Time for him to return it.

Timothy wondered a Moment, as he prepared to leave, whether or not the Cylinder had something to do with Raine; her Species, or rather that Species with which her People had been hybridised, about which he had done a great Deal of Reading sometime or other, disturbed him greatly, as did the Fiction whence it was come. Though something deep within him told him that little Good could come from such a World, Timothy found that he could not think badly of Raine for what she was because she had certainly not chosen to be it, and it did not appear to make her any worse a Person. What else would this brave new World teach him, he wondered.

With his Head full of yet more Questions, Timothy stepped out of his Room, and, after making certain that the Magic defending his Room against unwanted Entry had not been disturbed, disappeared again into the Depths of the Ship with his Head full of more Questions. Perhaps it would be wise to ask what the Cylinder was before giving it back if it could have come from so very dangerous a Fiction...

[To Elsewhere, and possibly also elsewhen]
