"Keris to all hands. We've been contacted by a ship belonging to a security force patrolling this sector. They wish to come aboard and have requested personnel to remain in their quarters. Co-operation looks to be the most expedient course of action - for now. But everyone be ready for anything - just in case. Richard, Shaina and Syn, please report to..."

Shaina gave a soured look of "well that figures" and rolled her eyes before looking between Timothy and One.

"This is M. Main Hangar. We'll meet you there. You've got four minutes before we get in trouble with people with weapons and a big ship."

Shaina checked to make sure she had her Rydberg and spanner and started patting herself down from chalk, grease, metal shavings and miscellaneous dirtiness best she could. "Welp. It was fun while it lasted I guess." She looked to Timothy, "On the bright side, I guess that gives you some time to check out those metallurgical samples ya pinched, huh?" she winked at him. "One," she addressed the robot who had to this point not even had a chance to start anything. "Luckily, you don't have any quarters; maybe work up something for your exterior? Oh, materials isn't finished yet. Uh, just...keep tinkering then I guess."

Timothy disappeared and reappeared as he did, wearing a new costume on his return. "Oh, wow, that's...very flamboyant of you. Well, hm, reminds me of the High Council, actually. You don't have a noys to go with that do you?" She caught his look and feigned ignorant affrontry. "What? They don't have noys where you come from?" But then she shrugged. "In any case I think you'll look a bit silly sitting around your room in that if they decide to pay a visit."

The Time Lady started walking backwards to the exit, calling out to Timothy again as she did. "Try not to get yourself in trouble, yeah?"

Timothy watched Shaina go, and he supposed it might be better not to follow, though he asked One, 'Is there anything you can tell me about these People who are coming aboard? I don't wish to be sitting about wondering who they are should they prove hostile.'

He did not particularly like the Possibility of Negotiations being undertaken without him, but he did not expect that any of those taking Part would give in to unreasonable Demands, so he allowed his Mind to move to the Weapon with which he was planning to Tinker — he could quite easily return to his Room and try to get it functional, though the Pistols already in his Possession were working well enough. He did also have the Metallurgical Samples, which he supposed ought to prove interesting. The Outsiders — insofar as the Realm could have such a Thing — might even prove well-meaning in the End, but Timothy was not really as Hopeful as he might have wished.

"I can only tell you what the Realm's systems have identified, processed and can relay," One responded quickly. Her mind connected to the ambient cloud of data around her that was the Realm. "Decimator-class or equivalent ship, approximately three times the apparent exterior mass of the Realm. Broadcasting Lethain Corporation affiliation with a SecForce complement. Relatively heavy kinetic barriers and energy shielding, but not as powerful as those of our own ship. Armaments comparable to ourselves if all of ours were functioning, which they are not. Looks to be built as an all-situations-capable vessel but with some concessions made by defence and firepower for the sake of speed. Assessment: Scout or Patrol vessel."

'And what is this Lethain Corporation?' Timothy asked, and he pronounced the Name as though it were a difficult foreign Word.

"A Universal-Tier, self governing corporate entity not so dissimilar from Czerka Corporation, Aereon Universal or Nasca Corp. Though it is somewhat distinguished by having a dynastic board of directors; only Aereon Universal is similar in that regard, and not anywhere close to as centralised and consolidated as Lethain Corporation. apparently they've had the same family exercising direct control for thousands of years."

One began gathering some of Shaina's tools from around the area but decided against it after clumsily failing to contain them in the clutches of un-fleshed hands and a skeletal crook of an elbow. "Someone may be upset if you don't return to your room soon."

'I have never heard of any of those Things, and neither am I sure of what a Corporation is,' Timothy answered; 'Perhaps we might continue by this?' he continued, and indicated the Pad he had been carrying.

"I would be happy to, Mister Chartier," One offered another of her grotesque smiles. "But if I'm going to be any good to anyone I should probably see getting finished. Besides, any information I can provide you can be accessed directly through your PAD or a terminal anywhere aboard."

'Well, all right,' Timothy answered. 'I shall depart for my own Room, then; good Day;' and here, he made yet another Time-Puddle, through which he departed.

[To Timothy's Room.]

[From somewhere spatially and temporally ambiguous, likely following some Time-Skip of which he was not aware...]

Timothy stepped out from nowhere into the Secondary Hangar, which was rather more disordered than he remembered, and then checked his Watch. It was a little later than he had meant to arrive, but it would have to do. If his Calculations were correct, the Security Forces ought to have finished examining the Ship by then.

[Shaina and Raine from the Med Bay pre-timeskip]

Shaina turned around and almost collided with the recently appeared Elegine, both hands awkwardly and somewhat desperately clutching a heavy, metal basketball sized object. The time lady grunted with strain and immediately lowered the object to the ground, dropping it the last centimetre or two with a loud, thick-sounding THANG.

"FFffff--scheiss--Tim!" Shaina spluttered with mixed irritation and surprise. "Omega's sake wear a cowbell or something. Nnng," she rolled her left arm in a large, slow circle, "probably pulled something there." She sighed quickly. "Should've known better though, really. Hang on." She turned and whistled loudly. "Haulers!"

What had been the Secondary Hangar of the Realm now more closely resembled a disassembled factory production line floor. Pieces and parts where everywhere, yet they all seemed to have some sort of organisation in how they were laid and placed around the place, and there was plenty of room to walk--it was the only way to navigate the labyrinthine layout. It all seemed to radiate outward from what was obviously the project going on: definitely some manner of ship, which now sat, menacing and foreboding, lurking like a panther about two thirds of the way from the exit to the rest of the ship to the hangar doors. The organised walls of parts and pieces descended into apparent anarchy the closer one came to the beast, which hardly had a surface not being scratched, hammered, welded, bolted, fused or metapressed by what could only be described as a swarm of small, hovering devices of sundry shapes and sizes. Above the craft hung the ceiling-mounted docking apparatuses, which had apparently been recycled into large robotic arms and manipulators which dropped down and worked from above on whatever happened to be below. Tracks upon which they moved were cleared visible like the web of the universe's most mathematics obsessed spider.

Presently, three members of the swarm flew from around the far side of the craft and zipped up to Shaina and Timothy with a quiet droning noise somewhere between a hum and a whine. They were mostly covered by smooth but sharp-edged gray metal plates which adjusted continually like shutters over their bodies and mini-impulse jets as they steadied themselves at hover level, even with Shaina's eyes. The perpetual adjustment combined with their super-geometric but duck-shaped form gave them a sort of pseudo-living feel. Shaina pointed at the thing she'd nearly dropped. "Port nacelle field inverter matrix housing. Get it settled. Schnell! Schnell!" All at once, one hauler zipped to the top of the matrix housing, something from its undercarriage latching onto an irregular surface and pulling the device onto its side, another zipped to the exposed underside and pressed against it and the third flew over and helped steady the housing as it was hauled up between the other two. The third then zipped all around attaching and wrapping the housing with touch-attach securement lines even as the other two were taking the thing away. It all only took a couple of seconds.

Shaina smiled in genuine delight with a touch of pride, putting her hands on her hips. "Awesome little gizmos aren't they? Cloud co-ordinated programming in base teams of three. One made the first multipurpose fine point manipulation team to help speed things up while I was gone, and then that team made another team, and then both made another each and then all of those started making specialised teams like the haulers. Each team is really just one unit, but the cloud-programming allows three independent devices to function like one. And they can combined teams real easy. Right now they're all hanging off of One as a hub to get this project going." She looked at Timothy, trying to read his features for a reaction. "What do you think? I-I-R-C last time you were in here we were still tearing apart the other stuff. Less than a day and me and Raine and One and the gizmos've got this thing mostly built. Hardware anyway. Software's going to be a whole 'nother ballgame."

Shaina motioned at the craft itself, which was larger than both the Ehni and Keris's shuttle had been together. The shape of Keris's shuttle's cockpit was still clearly distinguishable, though it was now clad with heavy looking gunmetal-gray plates like the rest of the craft. The Ehni itself did not seem to have any direct parts evident in the construction, though the overall shape of the vessel still seemed to resemble M's ship. As the two looked at the craft, one of the arms from the ceiling lowered and attached itself to the rear of one of the hull plates lying nearby and manoeuvred it into place along an exposed skeletal section on the far side of the ship; three of the gizmos zipped over and began attacking the seams.

"Come on, you have to admit, this is damn impressive. There's no way you or Cassius had anything on your planets even remotely comparable."

Timothy was a little surprised, and stepped instinctively back when Shaina nearly ran into him. She said a Number of confused Things then, but he did not catch most of it. Then he thought to look around, and saw that the Place was not only more disarranged than he had left it, but also rather fundamentally altered. There were many strange Devices about, and it seemed that a new Vessel was already at least partly assembled. It was not terribly aestheically-pleasing but little seemed to be aboard this Ship.

Shaina started talking again then. Timothy listened to her, and, at the End said, without much Alteration of Expression, 'I'm sure what you just said means something, but cannot begin to say what.' He had was not really certain what Software meant: the most logical Thing, based on the Compound itself, would be seating, but that could not be right, since it was supposedly difficult, and such Things could apparently be gotten instantly. He also saw nothing that he would have called a Cloud, but perhaps she meant that the strange Machines moving about were a Cloud of... whatever they were. The Word might well have meant something else in Shainese. It made Sense enough that they should have been made by One to make more of themselves for more specialised Uses, since she was a Machine-Person herself. He looked at them with what appeared to be a sort of passive Curiosity, but made no further comment on them.

At the End, he answered her, 'No, I don't suppose we have Swarms of little Machines, though Space-Travel is far from impossible for us... we simply don't do it. You might see some mechanical Arms and suchlike in a Place where lots big Things, like Aircraft, are manufactured — Candlebury, in Illyria, springs to Mind — but it's far from something I saw every day, I suppose, and not something in which I ever dealt personally. I cannot speak for the Planet lately departed since I did not see it, and know nothing of its Level of Development.' Then he began to wonder if her Query were really factual; there were Things he could compare to it, and Things vaguely like what he saw there, but the Scale and Purpose seemed entirely different...

Shaina scrunched her nose. "Why would anybody who can space travel not? Wait--you know, don't answer that. I don't want to know. But hey, hey, hey: come look at this thing." Shaina led the way around the miscellaneous parts until she brought Timothy to an open hatch in the side of the craft. It was a it of a silly move, since as soon as they walked up the modest incline and were in the craft...they could still see the hangar through the exposed skeletal frame of the rearmost quarter of the ship. And many of the walls inside were also incomplete.

"I know it's not much to look at...actually. But hey, did you notice even you don't have to duck to get in?" She opened her arms wide and walked slowly around in place, encompassing everything around them. "It'll be a little close quarters, but we'll be able to pack six people in here who could actually live aboard for extended periods of time--with modest cargo." She put her hands down and looked around a bit more seriously, not exactly speaking to Timothy anymore. "I think I'll call it the Intrepid." She blinked and turned back to Timothy. "All the parts were gone. I think the Dromes jettisoned whatever was left. Didn't feel right to try replicating anything exactly the same. But the name is still good."

'We don't travel through Space because that might attract untoward Attention from our Neighbours, which we should very much like to avoid,' Timothy told her, whether she would or no, with more Stiffness than usual. The Question seemed to irritate him a little. 'A protracted War in Space is something we do not desire, though the Threat may well have passed by now... I suppose it's been nearly four thousand Years...'

The Craft to which she led him next was indeed spacious, but Shaina seemed to have departed somewhat in her Mind. He was not at all sure what she meant when she mentioned the Dromeanthropes having ejected other Parts — Parts of some other Craft, perhaps? They could surely not have jettisoned anything that was on the Ships that had been there before, because the Ships were there after the Lizardmen were quite departed. He wondered a Moment what they would be doing to the Planet so impolitely severed from Reality, but guessed it could be nothing good.

'Why Intrepid?' he asked when her Monologue appeared to be at its End.

Shaina ignored the exposition. For the moment.

"Intrepid was our ship," Shaina put a hand on one of the exposed beams, feeling the cold, hard, silky smoothness of the metal. "Richard and Jayge and Syn and me. It was destroyed." She turned around and inhaled and exhaled deeply and quickly. "Anyway, I guess this tour should wait till this is more done, actually. You disembarking? I bet you're probably tired of hanging around the ship. Even if it is new and exciting. Amusement parks can be fun."

'You did see me step precipitously from nowhere, I believe?' Timothy asked. 'I went off somewhen in the Past when there was nobody here and did a little Reading. I learnt some very interesting Things, but I own I spent a great Deal of it playing a Game I discovered stored in the Ship's Computer...'

"Du verdammter Arschloch! Ich würde dich aus ner verdammter Luftschleuse hinausschleudern, when ich wüsste, es würde was machen." Several of the gizmos appeared to notice the outburst, bobbing up and down and twitching side to side as if looking at each other. Shaina stormed down the exit ramp back into the new Fabrications Bay gesticulating wildly into the air before spinning around on a foot and stabbing a finger at Timothy. "Of all the damned irresponsible things to do--" she shook her hands, "Listen Tim: I don't know what kind of screwed up place you come from, but if you're some great 'Royal Court Magician' maybe next time you'll take the opportunity to look around the local timestream and see exactly how unwise it is to treat time travel so casually in a place like this. And don't you give me any shit about how 'expert'," she punctuated the word with airquotes, "you are on the subject and how 'careful' you are about it all. You're a Royal Court Magician? Yeah well I'm a Time Lord. That's my race. Time is what we do."

Shaina smacked the Elegine as hard as she could across his...well she couldn't quite reach his face with enough power for it to mean anything, so she settled for his arm. Shaina raised a twitchy hand to her temple and took a few breathes, acutely aware of her sharp outburst of temper. "And you know what? You've got some nerve--"

Timothy looked visibly irked by whatever Language it was Shaina was speaking. The one they had been using up to then was difficult enough, and this one, though it felt somehow familiar, was entirely unintelligible to him, and not everything which followed made Sense. He nearly grabbed Shaina's Wrist when she struck him, but he found that he did not know precisely how much Force he ought to use, and so thought better of risking needless Injury. She seemed, further, to be exceptionally upset, but letting her go on did not seem the best of Ideas.

'Permit me to stop you there,' he said when Shaina began speaking again. 'Your Mind appears to be disarranged. I do not mind hearing what you have to say, but I do not imagine myself in the best State to hear it after being...' he here searched for a Word which did not sound quite so severe as assaulted, and wished that he had gotten a broader Vocabulary, but he eventually settled on, '...so struck, or is it that you ordinarily attack those who somehow displease you? I own I do not entirely comprehend your Reasons for doing... much of anything.' He was trying very hard, with some Success, to conceal the Fact that the Ranting and the Blow, physically inconsequential though it was, had incensed him. He took a deep Breath, looked calmer, and continued, 'If I may tell you something, I am certainly not a Court Magician — that is something you might find in an Era so ancient we no longer possess much of anything like a non-literary Account of them. The very Court itself is a highly ceremonial Thing: the King does his Work at a Desk in a quiet Study, not distracted by fine Things that have their Time and Place, and I did mine, when I was not obliged to be abroad, in one not terribly unlike it. As for what I am, Aner Kadenensis Eleginus — Elegine, the Word comes from a Kind of Poem expressive of Sorrow, which appears in both this Language and my own somehow, but it hardly means I feel it more than anybody else with the Capacity to do so...' he stopped here, but looked as if he had more to say, but was not sure how to say it.

[From the medbay with Shaina]

Raine still couldn't understand why Shaina had insisted on carrying all of that stuff herself. It looked very heavy, and she was certain that the Time Lady was struggling a little, but still. She'd been pondering this up until Shaina and Tim practically collided. "Easy there big guy." She put in as Shaina made a comment about a cow-bell. That thought amused her more than she was willing to admit.

As the Haulers approached and began their work, Raine had to struggle not to let out some manner of embarrassing noise.

"You weren't kidding," she said, carefully, "They really are adorable."

As the conversation between Timothy and Shaina continued, Raine elected to keep back a little, observing. She wanted to learn more about both of them after all. She did find the Elegine's views on space travel very strange... surely it would have made sense to at the very least invest in a defensive force or something? Just because they weren't interested in expanding beyond their homeworld, which she also found very strange, a nearby neighbour might not be so reserved...

She was pondering this up until Shaina lost her temper and made to strike the much larger man. Raine instinctively reached out to stop her, though she was too far away to be even slightly effective, and gave up half way.

"What is it with this ship and people getting angry at time travel?" She had to ask, concern heavy in her voice as she looked from one party to the other. Both seemed furious, though Shaina was a little more outwards about it. "Don't make me break up a fight now guys, I will if I have to." She added assertively.

"I don't give a damn, Tim, if your court is ceremonial or held at a desk or not a desk or with big frilly collars while riding a horse. You think I'm an arrogant, presumptuous, uptight asshole, right? Fine, I'll confirm your beliefs: you're primitive. Your society is immature. Since clearly you give about as much of a damn about what I say as I do to what you say it shouldn't really matter should it? And I'll knock you back into line as often as you need to be knocked. You know why? Because it's scary Tim. It's downright petrifying. This isn't your planet, this isn't your timestream. This isn't Gallifrey, Skaro, or Earth or any of my timestreams. It's fragmented and delicate. People like you and me--we step around the temporal neighbourhood and we aren't generating a few ripples which fade out, we're crushing dainty little sticks supporting who knows what massive trees. There are times and spaces in this universe that shouldnt' even work." The Time Lady's face darkened and her voice lowered. "Something like a time lock could have brought it all crashing down, but it didn't. So how much more fragile are things now? Do you know? Because not even the TARDIS knows now, and that's bad. That's very very bad. How many civilisations could you have made never exist by talking to the wrong person at the wrong time?

Shaina pulled away from Tim. "And one day--I know--it'll be up to people like you and me to keep it standing. So in the meantime try not to do anything stupid."

"Shaina!" One appeared from around several standing pieces of hull plating, making a beeline for the two. "Sorry to interrupt. There's an extramatter flow control irregularity in the nacelle you had several of the gizmos working on. It'll need fixing before the nacelle can be installed, which is all that's preventing some of the rear nadiral plating from being completed." Shaina looked at One with a stiff set jaw before dismissing the entire situation with a dramatic wave of her hands and walking off. One turned to Timothy, walking closer. "Let me say sorry on her behalf. You have to understand she's...touchy on certain subjects." One's mismatched eyes studied Timothy very briefly. "Are you all right, Timothy? I hope she didn't offend you too terribly. Can I do anything for you?"

Timothy did not answer Shaina directly; not all of what she said made Sense to him, and he at least wanted too know to what, exactly, she had been referring several Times before making any Kind of Judgement. What were Heurth and Galifrei and Squerau, or however they were spelt? But then One appeared, and Things seemed to be going badly with her Machines, so he left her to them.

'I'm not hurt, and this does not seem the Time to take Offence at Breeches of alien Etiquette, but a Part of me is rather bothered, if nothing else because there seems to be a great Deal about that I do not understand,' Timothy answered when One spoke to him. 'What Reading I did shows a Realm of Possibilities of which I never thought before, most of them unsettling, if not dreadful. I am certain that my own World is not what she imagines, but hers must be equally unfathomable to me. I am now surrounded by a great Unknown, and I am not sure how I ought to take it. I don't suppose there really is much to be done for that; mine is a World that shuns what lies without, and I must now face what my Ancestors would not; but sorry, I seem to ramble... What's this about disembarking and an Amusement Park?'

One nodded understandingly. "Well, on the bright side you at least have the benefit of reading. Shaina doesn't have much insight into anything like where you come from, and she's used to doing things on her own and having all the answers, so she's not likely to ask for help or even as questions. Wrong or right though, she'll assume that just because you can do what she has become accustomed to being the authority on, she'll assume you know everything she does about it. In reality, I gather you know neither more nor less than her on the subject, but merely that your understanding is different." One nodded to Raine that everything was all right as she walked with Timothy away from the unfinished craft. "Very many Time Lords are like that. With great power comes great paranoia, and in Shaina's case most of that paranoia has been proven warranted in the worst way. You could say that hers is also' a world that shuns what lies without.'"

One offered a consolatory hand on Timothy's arm. "Don't let it bend you out of shape. She has everybody's best interests at heart, she's just very bad at working with all of those same people." The door to the Hangar--more Fabrications Bay at this point--opened as they neared it. "As for the disembarking: the ship is need of maintenance and luckily enough for the crew, the Lethains--that's Richard's Corporate Dynastic family--have a place that can take care of that while also giving the crew a much needed break for amusement. Every kind of amusement, I gather."

'Our most basic Methods and Assumptions would appear to differ,' Timothy answered. 'What I do by Instinct and Experimentation, she appears to do mechanically. I suppose that's how it must be done when one does not have Magic, which, having seen so many without it, seems far more usual than I could ever have imagined.'

When One told him of it, Timothy thought the Amusement Park sounded rather nice; it would be something he had never seen before, and perhaps he could learn something about the World in which he had found himself from it. He doubted it would be a great Deal, but there were likely Forms of Amusement of which he could never before have imagined there. It might also be a Chance to learn of new Things to cook — it would be good to learn of more Recipes to try if he were to keep the Crew from getting too bored with what he made.

'How long do we stay?' he asked. 'And where do we go after?'

"As long as the repairs take, I assume. Also assuming the rest of the crew don't simply want to stay longer. As for afterward, I believe you'd have to ask your captain about that."
