Madeleine looked down at her suit that was now seriously in need of a press after its drenching.

"You might want to rethink the "smart" bit, she remarked, ruefully. "Remind me to listen to weather forecasts in future. This is the museum's dress code for everyone who works above ground - where the public might actually get to set eyes on us. When I'm down in the basement, working with the specimens, it's lab coat and whatever's comfortable. I just drew the short straw today and had to entertain the little monsters. As for what I'm doing here - pure curiosity. The flyer on the lamp post sounded intriguing and I never could resist an adventure. Not many chances to uncover exciting finds in exotic locations around here, so I'll settle for this. Who knows? I might go down in history as a heroine. Or a notorious villain - depending on what happens." There was just a hint of the manic about the accompanying grin.

"And how did a high-class gentleman like you get involved with this? You said the crazy guy posted the flyer. Does that mean you know him?"

Izu got tired of waiting for the beer and decided to head out again ignoring the commotion going on. He got drenched as soon as he got out the door tho. Sighing he looks up at the sky and wonders why the weather was so fickle here. He hadnt gone one day without it being overcast or rainy. It frustrated him, not that his car couldn't handle it, far from it, it was made to handle the rain, but this weather was bringing him down. He pays no attention to the two people who were part of the commotion before and heads to the parking lot and his car. Unlocking it as soon as he sees it.

He opens the Gull-Wing Door, a special retrofit for the car, and plops down in the driver seat. He checks the levels on the car, gas, nitrous (which, by the way, he never really used, he just has it in there for looks), and other gauges (all sensors that measured things on his car helping to keep it running at optimum) and put the key in the ignition but not turning it on yet. The phone rings again and once again he looks at it, hits the answer key and puts it to his face in a smooth motion and answers, "Yello." Listening to the voice for a few minutes, he laughs, "so the duides chicken out after hearing who the competition is, eh? HaHa!! Idiots. Thanks and keep me posted holmes. Catcha lata!" He ends the call, locks it and puts it in his pocket.

He turns the key with a loud roar and closes the door. The he puts on his seat-belt (a 4-point harness) and hits the gear shift to reverse, the speeds out of the parking lot turning on his brights as he does and roars off. The engine sounds rattling the windows of the buildings as he roars off.

Barrington-Smythe looked at the girl in front of him with a shocked expression on his face. Afer a few seconds of staring in disbelief, he said impatiently; "One doesn't simply explain a Widgeon, dear girl. No, some things in this world defy explanation, and a Widgeon is indubitably one of those lucky few things. The untutoured would say that its simply a very handsome species of Dabbling Duck, but you and i know better. Now am i to understand?" Here he lit another cigarette as he waited for the noise of a car outside to die down, frowning in a tired kind of way "That you are not, despite every indication to the contrary, a bloodthirsty assassin bent on my own destruction?"

Jess let out an exasperated sigh. "Fine, fine, I get it. It's a duck. Hurrah," she muttered under her breath. She took another gulp of beer as he continued, and nearly choked. "Bloodthirsty assassin?! Are you insane?" She paused to get her breath as she considered her question. "What am I talking about. Of course you are. I've never even met you; why on earth would I want to kill you, if you're not stealing my beer?" Another cough escaped, and Jess vaguely thought about what it would be like to die choking on beer while you're halfway to shit-faced. "What on earth gave you that idea, besides the flecks of blood on my boots, which, by the way, came from kicking in the face of my cheating bastard ex-....friend." Jess wasn't even sure what they had been, in the first place. It kind of hurt, if she was being completely honest with herself, which she wasn't, very often. But being slightly tipsy always made her a little looser with her tongue (and a little more soft-hearted) than is usually proper for a hardened, mean, wild punk, as she often considered herself to be. She sort of grumbled to herself, and leaned back against the wall, dragging on her cigarette and nursing her beer.

Ollie lifted an eyebrow in amusement. "Flare for the melodramatic, much? But appealingly honest." Or naive "I like that, makes you less boring. As for me, no, no, gaaahd no, I'd never met the man. Just saw him post it is all." Ollie looked sharply back down the street at the sound of an annoyingly loud car rocketing off down the street beside them, and noticed a second soon enough the large puddle in the street not far from where they were. He spun on his heel and pulled Maddy around the edge of a tiny side walk shop before the car could drench either of them.

He resumed speaking as if nothing had happened, other than a slight smile and a pat on the shoulder where he'd grabbed the lady, "And you assume I'm high class. Surely a museum lab rat knows that isn't always true."

She looked at him with renewed respect. "So, you're a man who dresses in a smart, expensive-looking coat and wields a very smart, expensive-looking cane, but hints that he may be anything other than high class. A man of mystery then. I'm being escorted by a mysterious stranger to a rendezvous at an unknown location with a person - or persons - with plans for sedition. The plot thickens!"

As they continued their walk, Maddy tried briefly to make polite conversation, but smalltalk had never been her forté and she soon gave up in favour of proceeding in silence, unless Ollie chose to say something. The Old Mill turned out out to be a good two miles away (was that why he'd asked if she was up to it?), which took them just beyond the edge of town. She was grateful that she was wearing comfortable shoes. The mill, together with a small barn, stood on one side of a small, stony yard, surrounded by a ramshackle fence and bordered by a stream. It was partially concealed from the road by a small copse of trees. The yard was overgrown with grass in many places and small bushes stood here and there that looked like they had seeded themselves, rather than being deliberately planted. Chickens were scratching about amongst the vegetation, and a cow stood in an adjoining field, reaching over the fence and idly munching on the leaves of one of the bushes. Judging by the apparently resident livestock, it looked like it now belonged to a farm. No-one appeared to be about, and there was certainly no evidence that it was still used as a mill.

As they neared the perimeter, Maddy turned to Ollie.

"What do you reckon? Is it safe just to walk up and knock? Do you think the place might be booby-trapped?"

She started looking over the terrain and the buildings, eyeing up locations where she figured snipers or mines could possibly be concealed.

Barrington-Smythe's eyes opened wide with shock. "My dear girl!" he admonished his new acquaintance "The widgeon is much, much more than a duck! Although you are right to hurrah it. Now.."
He stopped on the border of a tangent about the finer points of waterfowl, considering his audience. It was true, at first all the signs had pointed towards a bloodthirsty and ruthless hired killer, but when you looked past the prickly shell of arrogance, threats and agressive hair, she seemed like a regular girl. Well, almost.
So he changed his tangent. Leaning onto the bar and angling his head almost annoyingly close to her and forgetting for her boots momentarily, he spoke in a hushed voice with occasional random hand gestures that had no relevance to what he was saying, to throw anyone who might be watching off the scent.
"Listen closely, female plantigrade-" He paused to try and remember if that was the right term, decided that it must be since she was clearly nowhere near an ungulate (he couldnt see any in the immediate vicinity) and continued "You seem bored, what? Very bored. As bored as a chimp at a human tea party. So, i have a delicate proposition for you. Not that kind!" he added hastily, as her face suddenly changed to a very manacing expression. "A much more productive kind, hmm? The kind that involves loud noises, dissent, oodles of poetic license, and plenty of oppertunities to leave your boots unattended for a few minutes."
Streightening himself up again, he lit another damp cigarette and removed his one remaining shoe, transferring it to his other foot to try and keep the cold out. The pain was immediate and excruciating, but he wasnt going to give up so easily. "So what do you say, young hindgut fermenter?"

Ollie tilted his head thoughtfully for only a moment before cautiously proceeding through the yard, avoiding any natural pitfalls or the like.

"Well..." he took a long step over a mushy looking patch of mud, "I'm going to hope an open invitation such as it was doesn't include its potential recruits being killed or maimed." He reached the door and knocked once...twice...and then, wondering exactly what a half knock was, lightly tapped.

After waiting a minute, nothing happened, so Ollie spun around on his heels to look at Maddy, still picking her way across the muddy yard.

"Nobody home. Not yet anyway, I guess."

Maddy finally finished picking the driest route she could find across the yard, and came up to stand beside Ollie in front of the weatherworn door. She put her ear to it and listened. There was certainly no sound of human activity beyond, but she fancied it wasn't totally silent. Mind you, it was hard to tell amongst the ambient noise of chickens pecking in the grass, the cow munching, and drips falling from trees and bushes whenever the breeze caught them. At least they didn't still have the rain to contend with as well. She bent down and peered through the rusty iron keyhole. Inside was gloomy and it was hard to make out anything other than a dirty multi-paned window on the far side.

"I don't suppose it's unlocked..." she mused, and without waiting for a reply from Ollie, she turned the ancient doorknob and pushed. The door creaked open a fraction on stiff hinges. An alarmed hen clucked noisily and squeezed out past her feet, followed by four chicks. She released the knob and tried to rub away the rust stains from her hand with the other hand. She merely ended up with two brown-stained hands.

"Well, they're not trying to keep us out. Shall we take a look around?"

Ollie smiled, very amused, and held out both his hands in the direction of the opened door:

"Ladies first."

Maddy gave the door a shove and it opened wide enough to let a person enter. She poked her head round it and surveyed the room on the other side. Apart from a couple more chickens, who appeared to have entered through a hole in a rotting wood panel, there was no sign of life. The Old Mill appeared to be exactly what its name suggested: an old mill. No conspirators whispering together in a huddle; no maps and plans, detailing attacks; no communications equipment for passing secret messages.

"I guess it was just a hoax," said Maddy, turning back to look at Ollie, a distinct note of disappointment in her voice. "I suppose I should have guessed. I fall for tricks like this all the time."

Jess's brows furrowed when she heard the word "proposition" but the man was quick to clarify. What he was talking about sounded interesting. "I like loud noises, dissent, and poetic license." She looked down at his feet, then back up at him, leaned forward a bit, getting even closer to his face (so they were nearly nose-to-nose) and looking him right in the eye. "I will not, however, under any circumstances, be leaving my boots unattended for any amount of time, however small." She barely stopped herself short of a girlish giggle, which she turned into a light snort. "And judging by the cunning you've shown so far since I've been watching you, you'll need my help, anyway. So why don't you just lead me to this old mill of yours, and let's get to revolutioning."

Maddy stood just inside the doorway, dithering. Having come all this way, she felt rather reluctant just to turn around and go home again.

"Let's take a look around the place anyway," she finally said with a sigh. "The architecture looks quite interesting, at least."

She slipped into the gloom and slowly wandered about, taking in everything in the dingy room. As she did so, her toe caught something on the floor. She looked down to see a heavy iron ring showing through some scattered straw. Clearing the straw away with her foot, it soon became apparent that the ring was attached to a trap door.

"Ooh! I wonder what they keep under the floor!" she exclaimed, sounding animated again.

Ollie stepped in after Maddy and narrowed his eyes knowingly as he looked around. He stopped and dropped into a stoop to take a glance at the door Maddy had found. "Probably excess supplies back in the day, but" he changed the topic with his "but" rather quickly, impatiently, and gestured about the room, "doesn't this place look a little odd to you? I mean some of it looks as old as you'd expect it, but some parts," Ollie nimbly hopped up and to the side, indicating a particular rafter above his head with his cane, "seems remarkably well preserved and clean, wouldn't you say?"

The crazy man got up, mumbling something inane, and walked out of the pub. Jess picked up her beer and left two quid on the bar, curious to see where he would go. They walked through the rain for quite a ways, the man rambling nonsense, while she pretended to listen to him, occasionally saying, "Yeah." "Oh?" "You don't say..." Five minutes into the walk, Jess's cigarette went out from the rain, and she walked on, sipping her beer and being disgruntled. "So where are we going? I heard something about an old mill..."

Eventually they got to a dilapidated building with various livestock wandering around. "So this is it, huh? Looks a bit...run down." A chicken crossed her path and she kicked at it. It ran off, clucking irritably, shaking its sodden feathers. "What do we do now?"

Maddy looked up at the indicated rafter.

"Maybe it had woodworm and the farmer didn't want the roof to fall in."

But as she looked around she realised that Ollie was right. Certain sections of the structure did look considerably newer than the rest, and it looked like more than the kind of basic maintenance a farmer might do to prevent a handy "barn" from becoming unusable through decay.

"Someone has has done a lot of work on this building," she observed finally. "Do you reckon some group might be meeting here after all?"

She was about to add another comment but she stopped at a sound from outside. A voice.

She exchanged glances with Ollie, put a finger to her lips to signal for silence, and crept to the door. Rather than revealing herself to whoever was outside by looking round the partially open door, she crouched down and put an eye to the keyhole.

"It's that weird guy and the girl from the bar," she whispered, turning back to look at Ollie. "What should we do? Go out to meet them or keep out of sight?"

Ollie smirked and rolled his eyes, before cockily brushing past Maddy, swinging the door open wide.

"Evening, gent and lady." He addressed crazy Captain McCrazypants specifically next, "Found your secret hideout. Take too long rediscovering your sock to beat us here?"

Jess answered before he got to speak. "Nah. He was talking about ducks and trying to steal my beer. What's with this place? It looks abandoned."
She felt around in her jeans pockets and found a spare lighter. She took out a cigarette and lit it. "Still....I guess it's as good a place as any to start a revolution." Drawing on her cigarette, she looked around again, looking for more chickens to annoy.

Maddy managed to step back just in time to avoid getting hit by the door as Ollie pulled it open vigorously. She stayed out of sight, listening, to see how the dialogue would progress. Having satisfied herself that the pair hadn't come to ambush them, she stepped out into the open beside Ollie.

"So... what happens now?"

Jess shrugged, then slouched a bit, her cig dangling between her lips. "I dunno. Ask him," she said as she jerked a thumb in the direction of the man who had accompanied her. "He seems to be in charge here, God help us all." Still, she figured that as long as she didn't have anything else to do, it would be a nice distraction, and maybe she could get one of these more well-to-do people to comp her some food or a beer. Goodness knows she looked emaciated enough, from living on whatever scraps she could get her hands on while saving up for the (now worthless) plane tickets to these God-forsaken islands to visit the bastard who had led her on and then cheated with a big-breasted blonde bimbo. If this revolution got off the ground, he was the first one she'd kill.

Maddy noted with some amusement the expression on the crazy man's face at the sight of two of his earlier audience appearing in the doorway of his hideout. She would be the first to admit that she wasn't the best at reading other people's emotions, but it seemed to her that without him uttering a single word his face betrayed a mixture of nervousness, indignance that they should have the temerity to enter his headquarters without him, and admiration that they had found it. She figured he must consider his "secret" base to be considerably better concealed than it actually was.

Her disappointment at finding this whole "revolution" thing was nothing more than the ramblings of some delusional weirdo was starting to evaporate in the face of the potential fun she imagined she might be able to have at his expense. A pretend adventure wasn't quite so exciting as a real conspiracy, but she figured his antics would be entertaining enough.

"So this is your secret hideout?" she asked innocently. "I bet this is just a front, and there's a hidden entrance somewhere to a hi-tech base where you're plotting world dominion! I want to know what's under that trap door in there. A secret bunker? A weapons stash, maybe? Highly classified documents? Well, I don't really care who's in charge, but I'd love to know what that trap door's hiding."

Much as she would have loved things to be otherwise, Maddy held few delusions that the space under the floor whould contain anything more exciting than farm implements, if anything at all. Still, she was nosy, and wanted to take a look, regardless. And there was still the matter of the rather large amount of refurbishment around the building. Investigating fossil anomalies had been a major part of her work for her PhD, and these architectural anomalies piqued her interest almost as much. She wasn't keen to leave until she had found out all she could about the building.

She turned and stepped back inside, noting that the girl and the man were following her, the man rather more rapidly than was seemly.

So he has got something to hide, she noted.

The crazy guy pushed passed her and in through the door. But, as she followed him in, it quickly became apparent that he had no idea where the trap door was. The daylight was fading quite rapidly now, and it was only when Maddy pushed away more straw to reveal it clearly that he strode over quickly and planted his one shod foot firmly in the middle, preventing her from lifting it.

"Don't you want us to help you with your revolution?" she enquired? "You did post a flyer, inviting people to this place."

The man looked affronted. "Accept help from a government secret agent and a journalist?! Preposterous!" He stopped abruptly. Then, after a moment's silence, suddenly said, "Did you hear that? Outside! There's a breaking news story. You really should check it out."

Maddy looked at him quizzically. "I'm not a journalist! And I'm certainly not a secret agent. I'm a palaeontologist. And an adventurer... (She added that last bit as an afterthought.) And that sound is just Ollie coming back in."

"My dear lady, " he began haughtily, "I have no need of a palaeontologist when I have my lovely assistant to... err... assist me. My lovely assistant with boots my size..."

Maddy was momentarily nonplussed till she realised who he was referring to.

"So how about we get your 'lovely assistant' to open the trap door?" she suggested.

Jess followed everyone in at a leisurely pace, taking the time to empty her beer and toss it at a goose. It hissed at her, then waddled away in a huff, leaving Jess to allow herself a satisfied grunt. She walked in the door just as the woman was saying, "So how about we get your 'lovely assistant' to open the trap door?"

She stopped just inside, not bothering to close the squeaky door. "Am I the 'lovely assistant'? What am I doing now?" She dropped her spent cigarette on the floor and ground it out with her boot, then proceeded to immediately light another with the lighter she'd pickpocketed from the crazy man, not because she wanted another, but mostly to annoy the other woman. Taking a slow drag, she surveyed the room with one eyebrow raised. "Well, this is cozy. A bit more inviting than the hostel, at any rate," she stated sarcastically. "Can we start something in the fireplace there? I'm still a bit damp."

Ollie inwardly grimaced at Tramp's behaviour and utter disregard for...well, many things. People not withstanding, he noted, as the girl blew a puff of smoke at Maddy. In any case, Ollie moved to better close the door behind him, but was suddenly knocked aside by Captain McCrazypants, who dashed out inexplicably and without so much as a swear word. Ollie offered a small sigh and a shake of his head at the absurdity at the poor man, who had probably wondered away from some nice young people in white jackets with needles. Then again, nobody he knew was overfond of needles in the first place.

Making his way further into the barn-like structure--which he distinctly noted seemed to not have a fireplace, after Tramp's comment--Ollie smoothly and casually pulled the recently lit cigarette from Tramp's mouth and tossed it aside into a damp looking corner. "Not to be rude, but I am a non-smoking area. Poor lungs and all that. But yes, I dare say that our following the poor man has been a bit pointless. Unfortunately. Unless," he looked down at Maddy, who was kneeling by the door in the floor, "Mad Maddy would like to see if this place's last inhabitants left any droppings down below." He suddenly turned back to Tramp, extending a hand jauntily but not really expecting it to be shook at all after his cigarette theft, "Name's Ollie by the way; I don't think we've gotten to make a proper hello." Ollie smiled pleasantly and disarmingly, his quirky and unnecessary cane in his other hand making him look like half the eccentric Captain McCrazypants was.

"Hmph." Jess looked disdainfully at Ollie, one eyebrow raised, weight on one heel and her arms crossed under her breasts. "Those were expensive." Turning on her heel, she strode over to the corner where he'd tossed her cigarette and picked it up, examining it. Deeming it still good enough to smoke, she leaned in the corner--well away from Ollie and Maddy--and relit it, obstinately. "My name's Hawthorne. Jess Hawthorne. Friends either call me Thorn or Phoenix. You will call me Catherine the Great." She looked around the place that she had assumed had a fireplace. "No fireplace. How unfortunate." Taking out Captain Crazypants' lighter--which had turned out to be a zippo--Jess started playing with it, flipping it open and shut, giving a slow, wicked smile behind her glowing cigarette. "If ya'll are cold, I could turn this whole damned building into a fireplace right quick."
