Well, some of you may have heard of an infamous DnD dungeon known as the "Tomb of Horrors." Even among geeks who don't play DnD, it's rather infamous. Some of you also may have heard of some guy called "William Shakespeare." None of you probrably thought of combining the two. Without further ado, I present to you, William Shakespeare's Tomb of Horrors.

How it works:

Pretty much like any other play by post RP we have here with the following exceptions.

1.) You have a sadistic GM with no redeeming values(me) who tells you if your attempt to do an action succeeds or fails, and what the repercussions of that action may be.

2.) Your character must be from one of Shakespeare's plays.

3.) You must post in blank verse Iambic pentameter.

4.) You cannot find the "Tomb of Horrors" module online and cheat like the little bastards you are.

The adventure will commence in the next two days, anyone who has not signed up by then will not be allowed to join at a later date. Characters are first come first serve. Please note that this is in "Section 8" for a reason, and is not meant to be a serious RP. Humor, backstabbing, and mindless violence are to be encouraged at all junctions, with little to no thought as to cause and effect.

Tomb of Horrors I've essayed once before,
but worry not my American friend,
for I'll play for the lulz of the common.
Dread Fortinbras of Norway I shall play,
manly foil to oedipal Hamlet.

I call Puck.

Actually, I've never heard of Tomb of Horrors (except in rare passing, maybe). I do have the original first edition Keep on the Borderlands module, though, does that count for nerd points instead?

Edit: Wait, sorry, do the sign-ups have to be in iambic pentameter too?

As I told Paul when he pointed this thread out: I'm crap with iambic pentametre, but I'll give it a whirl.

Cassius of noble Rome I shall play.

This RP gains new members quite swiftly,
I am pleased to see it catch on like this.
Don’t forget it starts May twenty-second.
Remember the wise counsel of Ackbar,
beware of the most dastardly laid traps.

And no, you don't have to post in Iambic pentameter until the RP starts.

EDIT:

Some more info.

You're allowed to take with you whatever your character has possession of during Shakespeare's plays, but nothing else. You are only allowed to use magic if your character has demonstrated that ability in the plays. (IE: Puck.) You all start out on the same team, and share the same end goal of slaying the litch. However, if worst comes to worst, you may try to take advantage of one another, knowing that karma can be a bitch, and I, being the GM, own Karma...

As per GM's IM we should abide:
Remain allies unopposed betwixt us.
Strike a bargain right now, not cause strife late.

See you! Wouldst thou give me peace of mind now?

Ok, I'll sign up, though iambic pentameter is not a form I have any experience of trying to use, so please don't criticise too much if I get it wrong. -_-'

I'll be Sycorax. That'll give us a female character/magic user, though I promise she won't use "sorcery so strong / That could control the Moon". That'd make her nigh-on invincible. :P

Don't worry, you're in good company there.

No, but you, being Puck, can turn everybody into literal asses if I recall correctly. Now let's get this sucker started, shall we?

A fearsome litch in a dark tomb abodes
filled with treasure beyond wildest dreams.
There our Shakespearean heroes venture,
out to meet glory or a grisly death.

The noble Cassius leads his legion,
for the honor of Roma and senate.
The Dread Fortinbras too, makes out for war,
with a fearful Scandinavian force
for manly adventure and great bounty.
Mercutio comes for shits and giggles,
while Puck has been sent by king Oberon
for some reason of extreme importance,
and Sycorax comes for reasons unknown.

A long flat-topped hill about 200 yards wide and 300 yards long protrudes from the Earth. Ugly weeds, thorns and briars grow upon the steep sides, and bald top of the mound. Black rocks crown the rooftop. While approaching the hill, you notice the uncanny resemblance to a grinning skull.

Another stronghold which shall fall to me,
and this fearful assemblage of allies!
I send the vanguard of my mighty host
to reconnoiter and surround the hill.
One full regiment I shall now advance
so that we may find a gate to assault!

Behold great dread Fortinbras of Norway,
your brave troops return and report to you:

The north side of the hill is fronted by a 20 foot high crumbling cliff of sand and gravel. A low stone ledge hangs overhead, and bushes obscure it from observation at a distance. After some digging, three seemingly identical entrances have been found. One is labeled "TRAP DOOR," one is labeled, "OTHER TRAP DOOR," and the other labeled "SAFE PASSAGE." Some men went to investigate the one marked "Safe Passage," but the door locked behind them, and no amount of force would open it. It seems that your party has a choice between "TRAP DOOR" and "OTHER TRAP DOOR."

A description, I would like, to be known,
for each of the two doors that do remain.
For though they are both labeled entrapment,
I believe that one could be tenable.

Each entrance lies at the end of a roughly lit, plain stone corridor, formerly obscured by large amounts of sand and gravel. Both are full of cobwebs, with a set of double oaken doors just visible at the end of the passageway. The roof twenty feet overhead is obscured by hanging strands.

How perfect it'd be if those dang'ling webs,
would hide traps as the bush hides black serpents.
These great gates must surely be the prime ones,
no doubt stocked and people'd with defenders
greater than the seraphim of Eden.

If this tomb were truly like a fortress,
I would expect another entrance,
a postern, a back door, to enter from.
Thinkest the rest of you that we enter?
Or continue on a long-seeking path,
which may yield nothing but an ashen crop?

Forsooth, 'tis my opinion dear Fortinbras,
Discretion be the better part of valour.
Most likely no hurt will our progress befall
If in seeking further entrance ways
We tarry on this hill a while at first.

Yet, if thou truly desirest to enter now,
My magical fire with ease those threads might clear
And leave once hidden traps exposéd free
That we might ascertain the peril therein.

I would like to enter a thought, my own.
Iffen flame so great and so consuming
is at our command to use so well:
Have a go at yonder doors standing straight,
and see if they would such attack withstand.

If they truly be wood through and through, all
and safe from elements of the water,
then surely they would be of no hindrance.
If stained with said element then no loss.
Or if curséd with some foul prevention
the same we are as we had just begun.

But hold! Let the lovely witch work alone
and have no one remain 'bout the station,
lest some ill fortune befall them at once.
Many strong we enter, and good that bodes.
May we not waste without the best of cause.

An attack from the front speaks not well,
to a master of warfare and siege craft.
Thy legion is thy own my Roman friend,
they are yours to do with as you wish.
If you wish to smite this beast to its face,
then Norway shall seek to circle around
and slip a dagger through its rocky hide.

Where is your spine mighty Fortinbras?
You would not let a woman with a match
light forward piece of wooden aperture
while the rest of us hang back and stand clear?
See here--stay on this hill, all of us here
and not a one will come to any harm.
For the entrance is well made down that hall
and the hall's mouth cannot open to us
at its own will so long as we stay back.

I know not how't lies with a Romish dame,
but maids of Norway need no help in fights.
They are the match of any southern boy
for they give milk to true Norwegian men.
(aside)
Let the witch enter the main entr'ance ways,
For I will trust not my army and life
to the numbness of a litch's genius.
I know not what tales Roman children learn,
but the long deathless are not to be mocked.
(aloud)
Madam Sycorax, if you so do wish,
then bring light to the darkness o'er yonder arch.
If noble Cassius wishes to stride forth
to risk bloody Cannae and Trasimene,
then I do wish him success and fortune.
I am a soldier true, not a savage,
who charges blindly at all before him.
To conquer this tomb, we must work as one,
sword and mind marching lockstep together.

O, daring Fortinbras, you have my blade,
And my not paltry skill at swordsmanship.

Although, at this point, I must speak my mind-
My conscience agrees with Cassius on this.
I say, let Madame Sycorax, the witch,
Make these spiders' ropes alight with flame,

Living in the limelight, the universal dream for those who wish to seem.
Those who wish to be must put aside the alienation,
Get on with the fascination,

Dear Fortinbras, how dense you prove to be.
I ask you now to take stock of this place
and take the word of a Roman tested.

We stand upon an empty heath to trod.
Gazing past our station there lie three halls
one now lost to us all, trial unworthy.
But there stand the other two hallways still,
each down a deep stone trail quite strong and true.
Had we the maiden fair work her magic
whilst we gather far from the stone hall's maw
beyond the mouths of the others untried.
These untried apertures offer no harm
as we shall be within the heath still
and beyond their frightfully arméd length.

Now verily I tell thee this plan:
That the remaining hall shall be tested.
But whatever wrath it may offer us,
it cannot scathe us in the smallest way.
For you see it can project only straight,
and for our part we are quite away.

There is naught but caution in this device.
Held by just one the risk there is to take,
and that be the good lady Sycorax.
For us there is no danger to withstand.
The Lady's prowess is the only stake:
Should she think herself able to win out
'gainst any backlash the door may give her.

So I beg thee to tell the matter rash
you seem to see in this execution;
why we should not put the question to her,
See if one's risk is better than all ours.
