Let me just say, before I review this game, this will either be a love it or hate it game for fans of the franchise. Yes, it differs from the usual Resident Evil 4 experience in the sense that they attempted to "evolve" the franchise. Overall I found it a very enjoyable experience and loved some of the features they added to Resident Evil 5. Let us begin.
The story takes place in a country called "Kijuju" in Africa. You control Chris Redfield, and your partner Sheva Alomar are sent from the BSAA to investigate and destroy the rumored Bio-Weapon being developed by bio-terrorists in Africa. Now to me, the storyline seems perfectly suited to the Resident Evil franchise thusfar. They even bring back characters like Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker from past games to help fuel the fire of this game, which is overall a great move, they tie in well. But your first mission is to find a man named "Irving" who at this point is only a lead on the bio-terrorist organization, and not much other detail is given of him. This is what distraughts me, this segment didn't pull me into the game nearly as much as Resident Evil 4, where your mission was simple: Rescue the Presidents daughter. 8/10 for effort.
The Controls, Gameplay, and Audio are where I come to next. The controls are fine. If you think they're just awful, you will be used to them by the end of the game. I don't really see the complaining in it, my only issue is the D-Pad quick selections, I don't understand how those work. The gameplay is great though, the usual hack at the knees or shoot the knees then melee the zombie trick still works from Resident Evil 4, they throw in many new enemies to the mix, and still give that fearful presence from previous games. The environments don't really make you feel fear, I only felt it when running from Reapers in Chapter 6-3, or the boss in Chapter 2-1. The audio however compliments the game terrificly. It definitely gives off that African theme, the main/end theme is absolutely beautiful, when you are being chased or in a fight the music compliments it beautifully.
The game is definitely worth a rent at bare minimum, or a buy. Go play it now!
